Round Rock, Texas - While life on earth gives us opportunities to be used by God, going home into His presence is much better. On August 16, 2025, Benny Lu Evans entered in full soprano voice the safekeeping of Heaven. The beginning of Benny's story is simple and uncomplicated. Benny Lu was born in Odessa, TX, on December 28, 1952, to A.P. and Mary Jo Brown. She grew up in an era of stay-at-home moms, ballet and piano lessons, long summer camps, Wednesday night church, etiquette classes, and debutant balls. It was in this American Graffiti rock-n-roll culture that Benny began her formative years. She attended Ector County schools and graduated from Permian High. A budding social butterfly, she enjoyed being involved in the PHS Pepettes, the Glee Club, and Permian's Theater Guild. After high school, she enrolled at Dallas Christian College, where she received a degree in Christian Ministry. She was a lead singer and band member of The Revelation Singers, DCC's traveling band. Over Thanksgiving break, she was introduced to John Michael Evans. They married in May of 1976, a forty-three-year union which was interrupted by John's death in 2019. They lived in Midland, Big Springs, Pampa, and Amarillo before pulling up stakes and moving to San Diego and later to Poway, CA. Along the way, Benny and John were blessed with three children: Mary Kathryn, John Ben, and Lena Michelle. The Evans family was now complete.
This is where simple stories end, and life - through the lens of time - takes on all kinds of hardships requiring perseverance and endurance only the Lord can sustain. With a well-honed sense of humor, Benny faced many of these storms, and her faith grew. As the list of hardships increased, her walk with God became stronger and stronger. Moving back to Texas and settling in the Round Rock area, Benny and John enthusiastically joined Austin Stone Community Church, and they loved their church family. Together, they supported church mission work at home and abroad. Their residence became a respite for furloughed missionary families. Benny served in this ministry with great joy. Over the course of the last few years, health issues have become more of a struggle. There were surgeries, bariatric chamber therapies, and radiation treatments. Some of Benny's best traits shone brightly out of the incredibly painful periods. She slowly lost all vocal ability through these difficulties, but again, she persevered and endured. Through it all, Benny still found a way to communicate and worship the Lord Jesus; she grew in spirit. Benny believed in the triune nature of God, and today her voice is added to the choir pictured in Revelation 4 & 5 that constantly sings praises to the Lord.
Benny was preceded in death by her son John Ben, her husband John, and her sister Jo-Edith Brown. She is survived by her daughters, Katy Maguire and husband Chris of Round Rock, Lena Joseph and husband Scott of Portland, OR, grandson Caleb Hauer of CA, sister Ruth-Ann Jones and husband Don of Denison, TX, and sister Dolly Thomas of North Fork, ID.
