Gilbert was one of the finest men you could ever meet. I was lucky enough to have been taken under his wing during my first year of teaching at Bowie JHS and he's one the reasons I decided to stick with it for the next thirty-five. This sage of a teacher gave me advice and supported me when I really needed it and taught me to relax and not take everything so seriously. Gilbert had a certain way of walking, a way that showed he was confident in every step he took, yet still relaxed. Gilbert was a great example of a father, a teacher, and a friend. Everyone should learn to walk like he did.

A fine man and a great teacher. It was a honor to have taught with him. I think back with fond memories of the time he and I painted dinosaurs on the wall of my classroom. His art skills turned the wall into a mural that my students and many adult visitors admired. His dry wit and sense of humor made any time spent with him a pleasure.
I had the honor to teach his sons Nick and Daniel, as well as his daughter Cindy. He was so proud of them. God bless Gilbert and his family. May His peace be with you all. George Haynes

Sanchez was the best friend ever! We spent a lot of time together for the last 24 years. I don't know how life will be without him, but we sure had a great time together. He was there for me every time I needed a friend and he always stepped up to help me and my family. He was a wonderful mentor, father and example for many people. He was always ready with his corny jokes and ornery pranks to keep us all laughing at work and at home. I was blessed to have his company for many years. I miss him so much already. Rest in peace, Sanchez. We love you!

You helped me through some tough times in the beginning of my teaching career. I had you to thank for, for giving me perspective. All the kids loved being in your class, and knowing you personally, I could understand why! Good-bye my colleague, and friend. As you would tell me, "catch you on the flip side vato!"

I considered Gilbert to be one of my dearest friends. He had such a wit and charm about him. He was one of the first teachers at Bowie that made me feel welcome when I moved to Texas and started teaching at Bowie. He not only welcomed me in the Bowie family but made me feel a part of his own family as he invited me and my family to be a part of his family's Thanksgiving tradition. He was very talented, and I feel so fortunate and honored to have two of his paintings. My heart goes out to Nick, Cindy, and Danny and Gilbert's grandchildren. You had a wonderful father and grandfather, and he will be remembered.

Nicky, Cindy, and Danny, you have a wonderful father. I am blest to count Gilbert as one of my colleagues at Bowie. He did an amazing job in raising you and it was a pleasure to watch you grow up. Gilbert was funny, witty, and so knowledgeable about Native Americans. Rest In Peace.

While I never had the pleasure of meeting Gilbert personally, I came to know his daughter quite well. Based on her strength of character, dedication to teaching, and great love of her students, I know he must have been a phenomenal father and teacher to set such a fine example for her to follow. May God grant peace and comfort to Gilbert's family.

I am so sad to see this about Gilbert. He was across the hall from me at Bowie, and I can honestly say He saved my life . Gilbert was smart, and funny, and loyal, and a life-long friend. The world is a sadder place without him
