Gilbert was one of the finest men you could ever meet. I was lucky enough to have been taken under his wing during my first year of teaching at Bowie JHS and he's one the reasons I decided to stick with it for the next thirty-five. This sage of a teacher gave me advice and supported me when I really needed it and taught me to relax and not take everything so seriously. Gilbert had a certain way of walking, a way that showed he was confident in every step he took, yet still relaxed. ...

A fine man and a great teacher. It was a honor to have taught with him. I think back with fond memories of the time he and I painted dinosaurs on the wall of my classroom. His art skills turned the wall into a mural that my students and many adult visitors admired. His dry wit and sense of humor made any time spent with him a pleasure.

Sanchez was the best friend ever! We spent a lot of time together for the last 24 years. I don't know how life will be without him, but we sure had a great time together. He was there for me every time I needed a friend and he always stepped up to help me and my family. He was a wonderful mentor, father and example for many people. He was always ready with his corny jokes and ornery pranks to keep us all laughing at work and at home. I was blessed to have his company for many years. ...

You helped me through some tough times in the beginning of my teaching career. I had you to thank for, for giving me perspective. All the kids loved being in your class, and knowing you personally, I could understand why! Good-bye my colleague, and friend. As you would tell me, "catch you on the flip side vato!"

I considered Gilbert to be one of my dearest friends. He had such a wit and charm about him. He was one of the first teachers at Bowie that made me feel welcome when I moved to Texas and started teaching at Bowie. He not only welcomed me in the Bowie family but made me feel a part of his own family as he invited me and my family to be a part of his family's Thanksgiving tradition. He was very talented, and I feel so fortunate and honored to have two of his paintings. My heart goes out...
