Naomi Jane Carter

1934 - 2022

ODESSA - Jane was born in Big Spring, TX on April 5, 1934. She passed away in Odessa, Tx on Aug 24, 2022. Her parents were Junious Benjamin Whatley and Eunice Corrine (Faw) Whatley. Jane's family moved to Odessa when she was 4 years old.

Jane was living in Odessa when she met and married Donald Maurice Carter on June 3rd 1953. Their marriage produced four children: Nancy Portwood, Brenda Tompkins, Shirley McBee and Bobby Carter.

Jane remarried in 1967 and moved her family to Longview, Washington. She was hired on with Longview Fibre Company and retired from there 24 years later.

Shortly after retirement, Jane returned to Odessa, Texas. She started working at the North Side Senior Center in 1997. It was there that she met Carl Nelson Dotson. They were inseparable for the next 22 years until Carl's death in August 2019.

Jane was a beautiful person, both inside and out. The room would light up when she walked in. Jane loved to laugh - and she loved life. She loved to dance, travel and gamble. She especially loved spending time with her family. She was our everything and will be truly missed.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents: Junious and Corinne Whatley and all of her siblings, her brothers: Carl, Kenneth, and Richard Whatley and her sisters: Betty Whatley, Dorothy King, and Helen Leathers. She is also preceded in death by her daughter: Brenda Tompkins.

Jane is survived by her children: Nancy Portwood (widowed) of Odessa; her son-in-law: Rod Tompkins of Kelso, Washington, Shirley McBee (spouse Keith) of Odessa, and Bobby Carter (spouse Karen) of St. Charles, Missouri. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jeremy Osborne of Murrieta, CA, Darcie Leboki (spouse Michael) of Vancouver, Washington, Christopher Wells (spouse Mandy) of Vancouver, Washington, Tracie Tompkins (fiancée Chris Bouchard) of Longview, Washington, Scott Tompkins of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Thomas Wells of Odessa, Texas, Katherine Reynolds (spouse JW) of Vernal, Utah, Daniel Yaroshefsky of San Diego, California, Rylie Carter of Seattle, Washington, KC McBee of Odessa, Texas, Jarrod Carter, Cecelia and Tennyson Henry, all from St. Charles, Missouri.

Jane also had five great-grandsons and five great-granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved deeply.

Memorial services will be held at The Stomping Grounds in Odessa on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 5:00 pm.
