Ronald Self Obituary

EL PASO - Ronald "Ronnie" Edward Self, 71, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, January 25, 2021, after a brief illness. Ronnie was born August 2, 1949 to Bill and Edna (Duke) Self. He married his high school sweetheart, Ann Gilliam, on December 6, 1969, and they were married for 51 years. He was co-owner of J-Hobbs Machine in Midland, TX, and retired in 2010. Ronnie was loved by all that knew him; he had a huge smile and an infectious laugh, with a tender heart for people. He was a natural-born storyteller, lengthy and detailed, which included facial expressions and sound effects. These stories were usually told around a fire with a cocktail in hand and Johnny Rodriguez playing in the background. Ronnie had many loves which included his family, friends, and his lap dog, Judah Ben Hur. He loved to hunt, fish, golf, play the slot machines in Las Vegas, and drag racing. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Ann Self; daughter, Cindy Self of Odessa, TX; and son, Andy Self and wife Landry of Southlake, TX, grandchildren: Noah Nuñez, Chloe Heap, Emma Self, Davin Maney, and Davis Self; brother, Kenneth Self and wife Alecia; brother-in-law, Doug "Butch" Gilliam and his wife Carrie, and brother-in-law, Fred Roberson. He will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of life-long friends. Our family would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to all that bent the knee for Ronnie during this illness and all the other long hospital stays he endured. Special Thanks for the many nurses and doctors that cared for him along the way. God is Good! Our grandchildren were unable to see their Pappaw before he passed so they have given one word to describe their beloved Pappaw. Noah: "Cerebral" (Inside Joke w/ Pappaw), Chloe: Humble, Emma: Strong-willed, Davin: Caring, and Davis: His "look alike" is only two so... We have decided because of the Covid situation to have a Celebration of Life at a later date (tbd) when we can all gather and share fond memories. Memorials: West Texas Food Bank and The Permian Basin Rehab Center. Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home. To send condolences to the family, please sign his guestbook at www.sunsetodessa.com.

I grew up across the street from Ronnie on 36th street and he was my very best friend until my family moved to Gardendale when I was in the 6th grade. We loved little league and I used to pitch to Ronnie on our team. We had great adventures in our neighborhood and I missed him so much when we moved. Thankfully, we were just able to connect again after all of these years just a few months ago on Facebook. It was so nice to share a few stories, etc. I’m so sorry for his many friends and family for their loss.

Ronnie was a very nice man. He shopped at the grocery store I worked at. He always called by name and joked and smiled. He told me truth if I ask him a question. Very informative gentlemen. He knew his people. Ronnie will be missed..

When I first met Ann was while Ronnie was convalescing after a major illness and Ann said her husband was quite ill. In my mind I imagined a frail little old man. Later when I met Ronnie he was quite robust; not little or frail at all! From the first time I met him, Ronnie called me by name. Was I something special to Ronnie? Not at all. I’m sure he was that way with everyone he met. Seeing Ronnie at the grocery store he was all excited about a new grand baby AND a new pickup. When I was putting my groceries in the car, here drove Ronnie waving, spinning his wheels and revving the engine with the zeal of a teenager! That’s how I’m going to remember him; showing off in his new pickup acting like a teenager.

My first thought was that he was always kind to me, but I would imagine he made everyone feel special, I’m hoping he and Steve are playing a round in heaven awaiting our arrival

Sorry for your loss. I knew Ronnie and Ann and the whole family. I did business with Curley's Machine and saw Ann and Butchie on a regular basis and kept up with Ronnie through Ann. We all grew up together ion Odessa when the times were good. Godspeed Ronnie!
