Billy Bebber Obituary

On Saturday, August 9, 2025, Billy Bebber crossed from death into life. Billy Lee Bebber, 88, of Waynesburg, was born in Damascus, Va. November 26, 1936, to Howard Taft Bebber and Mary Catherine French Bebber. He grew up and for much of his adult life lived in Baltimore, where he worked at ACG Old Institute and FMC. He married Helen Theresa Bebber (deceased 2013), with whom he had two sons, Billy Jr. of Jefferson, and Paul of Baltimore, Md.; and three stepchildren, Ron of Florida, Debra (deceased) and Theresa (deceased 2021). His second wife was Mildred "Sue" Lorraine Minor, who died in 2017. Billy and Sue moved from Baltimore to Greene County in 1995. They raised his grandson, Shane Bebber (Danielle) of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Billy has many other grandchildren, including Maria Bebber of Baltimore, and Mario Bebber of Altoona; and great-grandchildren, whom he considered family through both birth and love. His two brothers, Kenneth and Austin are deceased; and his sister, Annette Creel lives in Baltimore. Billy was a member of Jefferson Baptist Church in Jefferson, where he supported the youth group and the food pantry. He was also active in both the Jefferson and Waynesburg senior citizens. Billy credited his mother for planting the seeds of his faith, but it would be decades before her daily prayers bore fruit. He was drawn to the faith in his later life by a simple act of kindness when a local pastor and the youth leader stopped to help him change a flat tire. That was enough to bring him with his questions to church and it was the beginning of a journey of Bible scholarship. Everyone who knew Billy also knew of his love for Jesus, for reading, and for learning. He could not only quote scripture, but also writings from famous theologians. He had journals filled with his favorite quotes and verses, and he was just as likely to burst into song as he was to pray for you. His love and care for those most in need - the poor, the handicapped, the lonely, is a model for all who knew him. He was generous and joyful, and the passion with which he pursued the life of Jesus, following his conversion, was the stuff of which his Lord must surely be proud. His smile, his songs, his laughter, and his prayers will be missed by all who knew him. A celebration of Billy's life will be held at Jefferson Baptist Church. Billy you were one of my favorite clients. I enjoyed every day with you I miss hearing you sing a song or 2 while I was doing my shift. You made me proud to be a caregiver each day you had many smiles on your face when I got to your home and walked into the room you was in. You was a good man. You are missed
