A man of unwavering faith, deep intellect and genuine compassion, Dr. Charles James Tripoli, MD, of Washington, passed away in his home on Saturday, November 5, 2022, after a prolonged illness. He was 92.
Charles was born on April 17, 1930, in Derry, a son of the late James and Mary Gelfo Tripoli, both of Sicily, Italy.
After graduating as valedictorian from Derry High School, Charles attended St. Vincent College, in Latrobe, from 1948 through 1951. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in 1955 and completed his residency at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh in 1957. At St. Francis, he met nurse Rita Rose Gabriel of Slickville. They were married on September 1, 1956, at St. Sylvester Roman Catholic Church in Slickville.
Dr. Tripoli served in the US Navy, as a Medical Officer, on active duty and in the US Navy Reserve from 1957 to 1968, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander before being honorably discharged.
Dr. Tripoli opened a private medical practice in Washington in 1959, and lovingly served the community as a physician for 43 years. He was a compassionate, humble, generous man whose deep spiritual and religious faith and love for his fellow man guided his caring hands.
He was well respected in the medical community and earned multiple awards including, the Washington County Italian American Society's "Man of the Year" designation in 1994 and 2001 and Catholic Charities' "Heroes of Healing" award in 2002. In 2011, he and his wife Rita were named Philanthropists of the Year by the Washington County Community Foundation.
A lifelong, faithful Roman Catholic, he was a member of Immaculate Conception (now St. James) Parish and served as a Eucharistic Minister, on the Parish Council, and on the School Board of John F. Kennedy Catholic School. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
A dedicated humanitarian, Dr. Tripoli continued to serve in retirement, by volunteering at a free clinic in Pittsburgh for patients without health insurance and by making multiple mission trips, through the Catholic Physicians Guild, to South and Central America and Haiti, to provide free medical care.
Dr. Tripoli was tri-lingual in English, Italian and Spanish, which he learned as an adult, to communicate with the people he served in Honduras and Guatemala.
Dr. Tripoli's love of travel extended to his personal life. He made multiple trips to Italy with friends and family. He also enjoyed the performing arts, particularly opera, and was an accomplished pianist, banjo and mandolin player.
He had a keen sense of humor and secretly loved the family's dogs, referring to each by the same Italian nickname with a grin on his face.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Tripoli is preceded in death by his fourth son, Paul; daughter-in-law, Darla; grandson, Roman; and younger brother, Joseph.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rita; 11 children: James, Louis (Michelle), Peter (Paola), John (Linda), Philip, Anthony, Sara (Shawn), Mary (Amy), Angela, Ada and Jennie (Matthew); 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Julie (Rob); in-laws, Caroline, Connie, Kimberlee and John Costa; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Dale D. DeAngelo Funeral Home in Washington.
Private services were held on Monday, November 14, 2022. Dr. Tripoli is interred at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

Dr. Tripoli was my M.D. in my young adult life. He was so kind, patient and attentive for every visit. He and Mrs. Tripoli would always say Hello when I brought my elderly mother to mass at IC. I attended JFK & THS with several of his sons and each demonstrated their father's character, kind, considerate gentlemen. Heaven has gained another example of a good and faithful servant. My deepest condolences to Mrs. Tripoli, Jim, Louis, Peter and John and all of the family.

Dr. Tripoli was a great doctor and a wonderful man. When my dad passed away in 1973, he jump out of bed and came to the house putting his tie on as he was getting out of the car. In 1968 he brought me into this world. He had a deal with my mom that if I was a girl that I was his and Rita's, but my mom (as much as she adored him) reniged and I stayed with her. He was my doctor for many years, and there will never be another like him. RIP to the very best doctor I ever had the privilege of know. I am so happy that it was him that delivered me into the world, because that is a connection with him that no one can take away

A family physician and General Practitioner role model and icon has been lost to us on earth. He did "lovingly " serve the community as his obituary accurately reads. It was not only his medical expertise but his commitment to each patient that was impressive. He knew each patient by name and usually their life story along with that of the patient's family. He provided great care. When he saw a patient outside the office, he stopped and spoke with them even after he left his practice. As a young hospital nurse, I learned from watching him work, listening to the questions he asked, and reading his chart entries. He generously shared his time no matter the silliest of questions. He was always a gentleman and a gentle man. He spoke proudly of his wife and children and was a living example of all that is good within his faith. He is one who is irreplaceable. I will pray his family finds peace and comfort in his memories left behind.

Sincere condolences to Rita and family. Dr. Tripoli was a kind, humble compassionate man and an excellent physician. He left this world a better and more peaceful place through his treatment of the sick and support of the many good causes and needs in his community. He has left behind a wonderful legacy and instilled high values in his children and their children. A man could not have lived a better life. Rita, the two of you set an example of what a marriage is supposed to be. May God bless you and your family and hold you in the palm of his hand.

He was my very first doctor as an adult. I was 17 when I first start going to him and loved him so much. He and Dr. Richardson took care of me all through my pregnancy and deliveries and then took care of my children. He was so special to me, my heart breaks for his family.
