Christie Haney Obituary

Christie Vandergrift Haney, 88, of Oakmont, died in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. She was a daughter of the late James George Vandergrift and Alice Mossman Vandergrift and born on August 26, 1935, in Spencer, Roane County, WV. Christie grew up in Charleston, WV and graduated from the University of Kentucky. She moved to Pittsburgh in the late '50s where she met Marcus Haney, her devoted husband of 64 years. They raised their four children in Waynesburg, where she wrote for the Greene County Democrat Messenger and the Washington Observer Reporter. An avid tennis player, she started and coached the Waynesburg College women's tennis team. She was an active volunteer in Waynesburg and a board member at the Greene County Historical Society, and for many years she was a tour guide at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater in Mill Run, PA. After raising her children, she and Marcus returned to Pittsburgh where they happily lived in Squirrel Hill for over 20 years. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. Christie is survived by her husband, Marcus Dean Haney, III; sons, Matthew V. Haney (Linda), North Port, Fla., James A. Haney (Jill) Cincinnati, Ohio and William C. Haney (Janet) of Hingham, Mass., and daughter, Mollie Haney LeBlanc (Kirk) of Colleyville, Tex.; seven grandchildren; and brother Frank Mossman Vandergrift of Oak Creek, Colo.. A service will be held from 11 to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, at the Homewood Cemetery Chapel in Squirrel Hill. Donations may be made in her name at the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
