David Ratica Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of David "Duke" Ratica, 81, of Low Hill, announce his passing. David went to be with his Lord Monday, December 25, 2023, in his home, with family by his side. Duke was born August 21, 1942, in Brownsville to the late George "Chip" and Anna Kobaly Ratica. He married Linda Smith Ratica December 31, 1971. Duke was a 1960 graduate of Centerville High School, and enlisted in the U.S. Marines in November of 1960. He served four years as a Corporal, receiving the Good Conduct Medal and Rifle Expert Badge. After the military, Duke co-owned and operated the Ratica dairy farm with his brothers for many years. He then pursued a career in the coal mining industry, while still operating the family farm. He retired from the coal mine in 2003. Once retired, he continued to be the avid farmer and gardener, his true passion to giving back to the land (God made a Farmer). Duke's passion was his love for his family, farming, and sharing his knowledge and expertise in gardening; as many people in the community knew, his kindness was spread amongst all. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and was the most kind-hearted person that you would meet. Duke is survived by his son, David (Stacy) Ratica of Low Hill; a sister, Barbara (William) Poeschl of Pittsburgh; granddaughter, Natasha Ratica; and his great- granddaughter, McKenzie Pappas; grandchildren, Nick, Mark, Madison Ratica; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Duke was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Smith Ratica, who passed December 17, 2016; a son, Mark Ratica; brothers, Bob and George "Gus" Ratica; and sister, Janet Richmond. Per Duke's final wishes, there was no service or viewing; just cherish your memories of him.
