He served in the 108th Engineer Combat Battalion as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and was deployed to the Philippines during World War II then Japan. He worked at the Vesta 5 coal mine, then International Salt Company in Cleveland, Ohio.
He married Elsie M. Brown, also from Vestaburg, in 1955. Elsie passed away January 2, 1974.
Upon retirement, John enjoyed traveling across the U.S. and Europe visiting his children and grandchildren and exploring new locations; always on the lookout for the winning lottery ticket so he could give it all away.
John recently resided at Genoa Retirement Village and was very appreciative of his regular caregivers. In June 2019, he was able to participate in an Honor Flight arranged through his caretakers.
Surviving are his two children, John Koss (Donna Ruedisueli) of Maumee, Ohio, and Valerie (Greg) Davisson of New Braunfels, Texas; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister Mary (Bill) Kuric of Vestaburg; several nieces and nephews; and long-time companion Eleanor Schreiber.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents and wife, were sisters Matilda Ludrosky and Margaret Cybulski; and his brother, Francis Koss.
The family understands that current circumstances may cause many to be wary of participating in funeral-related activities. Interment will be June 2, 2020, at Beallsville Cemetery in Beallsville. A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date.
