Margaret Hughey Obituary

Margaret D. Hughey, formerly of McDonald, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 20, 2024, in her home at Hawthorne Woods Assisted Living, Washington. She was born February 10, 1921, a daughter of the late Dr. John A. and Mary Robb Douglass of McDonald. She was a life-long resident of McDonald graduating from high school in 1938. She attended Muskingum College and Business Training School (now Point Park College). On September 4, 1943, she and Dr. James R. Hughey of Burgettstown were married in McDonald. Upon his return from the service in 1947, they settled in McDonald, where Dr. Hughey practiced medicine for 35 years. Dr. Jim was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He passed away June 22, 2000. Margaret "Peggy" Hughey was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church, now McDonald Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and served on various committees and projects. She played an active role in community service, helping to organize the Diamond Jubilee in 1964 and was also co-chairman of the Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. She was one of the founders of Lincoln Avenue Arts as well as the McDonald Trail Station and Meeting House. She enjoyed doing crafts, knitting and painting bird pictures. Writing was also an important part of her life. She was the first editor of the McDonald High School Chronicle and a copy reader for the McDonald Outlook during the time Dr. Jim was in the military. Since that time, she has enjoyed writing about family history and other topics of interest. She is survived by her son, James R. (Nicholette) Hughey, Jr. of McDonald; grandchildren, James R. (Joanna) Hughey, III of Carnegie, and Shannon L. (Katie) Hughey of Penn Hills. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Campbell, Rachel Hughey Malarkey and Mary Robb Ballantyne; and a brother, John A. Douglass, Jr. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in Thomas-Little Funeral Service, Inc., 314 W.
