Martha Ellen Herod

Martha Ellen Herod, 79, of Greensboro, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born December 16, 1944, in New Freeport, she was a daughter of the late Bradford Shaffer and Ocie Marie Newell. A 1964 graduate of Waynesburg High School, Martha was retired from First Student after nearly 30 years as a school bus driver in the Jefferson-Morgan School District. Since 1977, she has faithfully supported and worked together with her husband in their Christian ministry at the Hallam Lighthouse Mission in Collier. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Leonard Herod, to whom she was married April 18, 1965. Also surviving are two children, Dean E. Herod and wife Paula of Anderson, Ind., and Sheila Herod of Noblesville, Ind.; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Strope and husband Bob of Rogersville, and Katherine Rear of Springfield, Mo. A son, Chad Andrew Herod, passed away November 14, 2023. Also deceased is a grandson, Colton Lee Breckenridge; a great- grandchild, Misha DeBolt; and a sister, Grace Lingenfield. Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, in the Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion, where visitation continues from 11 a.m. until the noon hour of service Wednesday, July 3.
