Mary M. Pettit, 100, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 11, 2023.
Born May 31, 1922, in Keefer, Okla., she went to Pettit Elementary School in a one-room school house with all grades in Swartz. Her sisters, Mildred and Geraldine, taught there. She graduated from Waynesburg High School and went on to further her education, graduating from a business school, Waynesburg Business Academy, in Waynesburg. At the business academy, her superintendents were her uncles, Arley Pettit and Francis Pettit.
She lived in Waynesburg with her sister, LaNelle until LaNelle joined the Cadet Nurse Corps at the University of Pittsburgh in 1944.
When her mother, Ethel Pettit was critically injured in a car accident, she returned to the farm to help the family care for their mother. Mary lived at the family farm afterwards. She worked at a Green County telephone communication company. She cared for her mother and her sister, Geraldine. Mary worked for Mayview State Hospital in Canonsburg and when The Youth Development Center of Waynesburg opened, she transferred there. She was a clerk typist II. She retired in the 1980s after a long career.
Mary loved dogs, cats and genealogy. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mary was a wonderful, unique individual. I worked with her at Youth Development Center in Canonsburg for approximately two years. During that time, I did not know how to drive. Mary went out of her way and drove me to my home each and every day. I might add that she did this out of kindness, as she would never accept money from me, not once. I lost contact with her for many years but after an exhaustive search, I found her number and we talked via telephone. I wanted to tell her again how much I appreciated what she did for me and because of the goodness she had shown me, I tried to do good deeds towards others. Mary had a quiet demeanor and never expected recognition for things she did for others. She will be greatly missed and her family has my deepest condolences. May Mary rest easy on the wings of angels.
