The Rev. Mary Jane Chase Sprowls, 105½, of Shenandoah, Va., formerly of Claysville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, on Thursday, November 4, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Frederick Franklin Chase and Cassandra Elizabeth Grandon Chase.
On April 20, 1936, she married Harold "Brick" Robert Sprowls, who died July 25, 1999.
Mrs. Sprowls was co-pastor of Roadside Chapel until Harold's death, then became pastor until her retirement in 2014.
She is survived by a son, Larry Sprowls (Susie) of Martinez, Ga.; a daughter, Sue Sprowls Kite (Bill) of Shenandoah; two daughters-in-law, Lynda Sprowls, of N. Augusta, S.C., and Cathy Sprowls of Evans Ga.; grandchildren, Mark Plants, Frank Sprowls, Brenda Sprowls Shapleigh, Cassandra Plants Gray, Melinda Plants Heatley, Robin Ford, Stephen Dunn, Jay Plants, Gary Johnson, Stephanie Kite Lee, Melissa Kite Smith, Brian Sprowls, Holly Johnson Sanders, Melanie Kite Whitfield, Tracey Johnson Schultz, Larry Sprowls II, Ashley Sprowls-Gatts, Tonya Kite May; 60 great-grandchildren; 44 great-great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-great-grandchildren.
Also included in her survivors are her special niece and nephews, Darlene Canterbury, Edward, Russell, Arthur, Dale, David, and Darrell Sprowls.
For 50+ years, she wrote a column for the former Claysville Weekly Recorder and current Small Town News.
Deceased are one daughter, Betty Ann Sprowls Plants; two sons, Charles Robert Sprowls and John Mark Sprowls; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Roadside Chapel, 37 Chapel Hill Road, Claysville, on Friday, November 12.
A private family graveside service will be held Saturday.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the Roadside Chapel at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 13, with the Rev. Gary A. Johnson officiating.
The family is encouraging all to wear your favorite denim or pink clothes to the Celebration of Life, as that was Mary's "fav-o-rite" attire.
