Rebecca Wharton Obituary

Rebecca Anne "Becky" McCreight Wharton, 83, was welcomed into the loving arms of God on Friday, March 21, 2025, surrounded by her family. The eldest child of John B. and Jane Wallace McCreight, Becky was born August 14, 1941 in Washington. She was a 1959 graduate of East Washington High School, attended The College of Wooster, studied in Vienna, Austria and graduated in 1964 from the University of Pittsburgh. They had not dated though they knew each other at East Wash High School, but on the day Becky walked into her new job at Trans World Airlines, Jack saw her and said, "Now, that's the girl I'm going to marry." A couple of years later, on April 19, 1969, these best friends, Jack and Becky, were married. Becky was a participant and patron of the Arts. She was an active singer all her life: harmonizing with her sister, and as a member of Heinz Chapel Choir, Pittsburgh Oratorio Society, Church of the Covenant choir and Washington Festival Chorale. She studied painting and figure drawing, and was inspired by many forms of art. She enjoyed the symphony, lectures and Willie Nelson. As a girl, Becky earned The Curved Bar, the highest award in Girl Scouting. As an adult, she served as a Girl Scout Leader at several levels. A life-long member of the Church of the Covenant, Becky was ordained as an elder, served on session, sang in choir, active in Presbyterian Women, and made countless posters and photo displays with an artistic flair. Becky was a phenomenal role model for her daughters, incredibly loving and unique, a political activist and was close with her extended family. Becky had many traveling adventures with Jack and their girls, nearby and around the world. In addition to her husband, the love-of-her-life, Jack, Becky is survived by her daughters, Emily (David) Koehler of Falls Creek and Susan (Steven) Robertson of Canonsburg; a sister Nancy A. McCreight of Washington; grandchildren: Marshall, Ian, Jack, Sarah, Grace and Joshua; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, John W. and Mildred McCreight. Donations may be made to the Washington County Humane Society, or Church of the Covenant (choir). Services will be private, led by the Reverends David and Emily Koehler, under the care of Piatt Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. Becky and I were cousins. Becky was a loving person and fun to be around. She could find humor in the most mundane of situations. We had fun singing and harmonizing together, and we had the best chats! She was always on the look-out for a way that she could help someone. I miss her greatly! I will treasure all of my memories of my dear cousin Becky!

Tricia and I shared a love of the arts with Becky,
particularly figure drawing with Ray Dunlevy. She and I also sang in the church choir together for many years. Becky was passionate and creative about everything she did, blessing all with her unique style.

Becky was my wonderful friend from first grade through high school and all the ensuing years. In grade school we scavenged the neighborhood for soda bottles and collected our fortunes! Girl Scouts, art projects, majorettes together, and later, a fun family auto trip out west to Yosemite. I could add so much more! Becky is much missed by her friend of 77 years!
