Shirley Johnston Obituary

Shirley Marlene Wilson Johnston passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family following a long and courageous fight against complications from cancer. Born on September 21, 1946, a daughter of the late Ivan Howard and Jean Aubrey Wilson, Shirley grew up with strong roots in faith, family, and community. She graduated from Washington High School in 1964 and went on to marry the love of her life, David Ross Johnston-affectionately known as "DRJ"-on December 31, 1966. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and devotion to each other. Shirley was the proud and loving mother of Joy (Dan) Adams and David Johnston II. She cherished her role as "Mam Mam" to her granddaughters Morgan (Jordan) Wright and Aubrey Adams, and she was eagerly looking forward to becoming a great-grandmother in April. She was a beloved sister to Jean West and Lynn Schrader and a caring aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jim Wilson; and brothers-in-law, David West and Donald Schrader. Shirley was known for her kind and thoughtful spirit; she loved sending cards for every occasion and wanted those around her to know she was thinking of them. She was a lifelong member of West Washington United Methodist Church, where her faith shone brightly through her service and compassion through many roles in the church. A devoted homemaker and longtime sales representative for Home Interiors, Shirley poured her heart into everything she did. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose unwavering faith touched everyone she met. A special thank you to Amedysis hospice and to her wonderful nurse Anna and caregiver Ayanna and Megan who brought much comfort to her and our family the last few weeks. Friends and family will be received on Tuesday, October 28, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hummel and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington and on Wednesday, October 29, from 11 to 12 p.m. in the West Washington United Methodist Church, 625 Fayette St., Washington. A funeral service will follow at 12 p.m., officiated by Donald Herschell. Interment will follow in the Washington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to West Washington United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be expressed at www.hummellandjones.com. Sending prayers for comfort and peace to her family. I got to know Shirley when she donated to our homeless clinic at Jefferson Avenue United Methodist church. A very nice lady.
