Sweet blessings to Sue Marchewka, my second adopted mother in the Adams-Monroe Street neighborhood, 4th Street Extension, Carroll Township, Monongahela, PA; and my mom's (Rose Taylor) best friend. My best to Kathy, Karen and Harry, and all your families.
Sue lives in my memory as the absolute sweetest babushka, riding next to my mom, through thick and thin. The food, the safe place, the neighborhood gatherings... she drank black tea with milk... like I can see it yesterday. All the memories... too many to recount: homemade noodles and chicken soup, the cookies, pinwheels, lady fingers, hard tack candy, orange drop cookies, the all-day ravioli-making parties..., St. Anthony's / Transfiguration, christmas decorations, catholic mass, Harry graciously serving as my confirmation sponsor, baseball in the backyard by the brick fireplace, softball in the field, Karen's wedding reception at the house, Kathy's prom day, Big Harry and his sense of humor, the Malibu, all of us kids tearing out the driveway and pouring new concrete - DIY, the back porch addition, the Dias' the D'Amico's the O'Leary's the Taylor's; Leacha, Gloria and Bill Jordan; the "Twins", "Chew" the pitcher, Mon Valley Catholic, Bobby Badness and the muscle car, recycling Karen's dining room set for my young family start, Donora Pharmacy, backyard gardens, summer tomatoes, neighborhood Pinochle games at Leacha's, the monthly Wednesday night card club with my mom: Sue, Rose, Ayoka, Mary Bednar et al... playing "500" like it was yesterday; grocery shopping with my mom, "Foodland", "Bartolotta's", "Regos', "Hoss's", "Eat and Park", "Big Boy's", "Bingo", watching the Green Hornet with Harry as kids, the Avengers, the cool basement space in hot/humid summer, the front room; family vacations with Big Jim Taylor to Tionesta, swimming in the creek, crawdad's... all pictures in my ancient photo albums and wonderful memories in my mind. I have a great picture in a family photo album of Kathy, Karen, Harry and myself at Tionesta, in the water... no idea, maybe 1965.
Most importantly, Sue was there for my mom in 1996, when she fell and broke her hip...the neighborhood friendship, care and community concern; the help with Rose's passing, "my second mother".
As coincidence would have it, I just made "Sue's Nut Roll" recipe two days ago, for the first time in 10 years at least, straight out of Rose's red recipe box, on a 3 x 5 card in my mom's handwriting... some christmas cookie baking. I guess Sue and my mom were talking to me... they are together now in the better place.
Condolences and much thanks to the Marchewka Family, your mom lives on more than you know. In my thoughts and prayers, god bless.
Steve Taylor and daughters, Shaloma & Keturah.

Ciocia Sue was a very sweet lady--so cheerful and loving! We were so blessed to have such a wonderful extended family. May she, and all those who have gone before her, rest in the arms of Jesus.
