"Well done, good and faithful servant of Jesus Christ, Our Lord."
William "Sonny" Slater Jr., 80, of Johnstown, Ohio, passed away in his residence Saturday, August 6, 2016, surrounded by his family.
He was born October 8, 1935, to the late William Sr. and Anna Bettley Slater in Burgettstown.
He was led to be born into the Kingdom of God by pastor and friend Bob Swanger.
He served honorably with the military police in the U.S. Army and graduated from California State Teachers College.
He taught at North Hills Elementary School in Pittsburgh and retired as commercial insurance executive after 33 years of service at Nationwide Insurance.
Surviving are wife of 55 years, Rebecca Bixler Slater; children Sherri (Greg) Meigs, Traci (Steve) Bulen, Matthew (Tabatha) Slater Sr., Mark Slater and Michael (Jennifer) Slater; grandchildren Kelli (Jeff) Palmer, David Meigs and Shirlei, Isabelle, Rebecca, Matthew Jr., Charles, Garrett, Eli and Jeanette Slater as well as Emily, Ally and Katie Slater; sister Carol (Bob) Maltony; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are siblings Joyce Bable, Gary Slater, Barbara Irwin and Kathy Booher and nieces Pam Poland and Marcy Bable.
The staff of Mt. Carmel Hospice provided loving care.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to noon, the time of service, Saturday, August 13, in Newcomer Funeral Home, NE Chapel, 3047 East Dublin Granville Road, Columbus, OH 43231, with Pastor Chris Frye officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Church Cemetery, Johnstown, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Church Without Walls, 310 Everett Avenue, Newark, OH 43055.

Bill hired me at Nationwide Insurance, Columbus, OH, from my temporary position there in 1984. It was a rough life for my 4 kids and me at that time. He was very supportive of me and took me under his wing for my home life and at Nationwide. My wonderful Dad called him and thanked him for hiring me full time, and Bill was very gracious to him. Bill was a great man in many ways, especially spiritually. May he rest in God's peace. May God's angels comfort his family and friends.
