Edward Fox Obituary

Edward Alvin Fox, age 59, passed away on Monday, December 31st, 2012. He is survived by his wife Patricia Shippee-Fox and their children, daughter Elizabeth and son Benjamin Fox. Ed also leaves a brother Phil, sisters Sondra and Eileen, many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and an uncle. Ed began life in New York City. His family moved to Alabama and North Carolina before returning to Wantagh, New York, where he was well respected and admired by his high school companions. He briefly attended Oberlin College until wanderlust took him away on a three year adventure roaming across North America. Ed had many experiences during his quest to know his world, including working in a gold mine, on a railroad, and in a plum orchard. Ed completed his teaching certificate at S.U.N.Y at Brockport in Biology. He taught at Maple Hill High School in Castleton, NY, forging lifelong friendships with his fellow teachers, including his future wife. Dr. Fox obtained his PhD. in Biochemistry in Dr. Bud (Clarence) Ryans lab at Washington State University in Pullman, WA. Aside from family, Ed enjoyed teaching, laughing, helping others, and drawing upon his signature culinary skill of making sandwiches carved into letters, which he did for children. Dr. Fox worked at Harvard Medical School, Brigham & Womens Hospital, and, for the past 17 years, the Dana Faber Cancer Institute in Boston. A Memorial Service was held Friday, January 4th at 1:00PM at the Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Miller Street, Medfield. There were no visiting hours and burial was private. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to either the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104 or the A.S.P.C.A. Tributes, 520 8th Ave., 7th Floor, New York, NY 10018. See www.robertsmitchell. com for directions, guest book, the obituary and additional information.

I met Ed and his lovely wife, Pat, in graduate school at Washington State. We were both students in the same lab there. Ed and I shared our ups and downs and we became great friends. I am certain that Ed brought joy to many people throughout his life. He was simply that kind of human being.

I am so shocked to hear only this week that Ed has passed. I left Dana Farber where I collaborated with him briefly earlier last year. When I asked advise on a gene expression project he invited me in his office (filled with family pics) and so impressed me with his immense kindness, generosity, and his helpful and passionate sharing of scientific knowledge. He also shared his pride of the scientists that worked with him. What a great loss of an exceptional man. Unbelievable..so sorry for his family and colleagues...

In every way, Ed was a generous colleague and scientist - it was a true privilege to work with him. While I am struggling to understand why the good die young, I am buoyed by thinking of his warm spirit and how seamlessly he shared his love of his work and family in all our interactions. You could not help but want to do well by him because of how well he did by all others. My heartfelt condolences to his family and dear friends.

Unfortunately I lost track of Ed in college. The last time I tried to locate him, his parents showed me a beautiful picture of his little girl. Although , we never reconnected he has always left me with a loving spirit,as I am sure he did to so many. I would love to hear at some point how his path in life went, since I last saw him @ SUNY@ Brockport. I heard that his wife was from Rhode Island. Love & prayers to all

Ed was totally unique in my experience--thoroughly dedicated to helping others and making the DFCI a better place. His contributions forwarded cancer research. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and his family.

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of "Eddie Boy" Fox, as my brother called him for more than 50 years. To all those who loved him, including my brother Glenn Tobe, I hope that we will all find comfort in the great life that we know Ed led and the many loving memories that will live on in all who knew him.

Ed was a wonderful person. He was a great colleague, always ready to help. I still remember being stranded with him in San Diego at a conference on 9/11. We reflected on the important things in life, he adored his family and he will be greatly missed.
