Ocala - Robert L. "Bob" Wines, Sr., a long-time Ocala businessman, 95, died May 22, 2013 at Sylvia's Hospice House in Ocala FL.
Bob Wines, Sr., son of Allen and Ida Wines, was born January 1, 1918 in Dublin GA. In 1921, his family moved to Sumter County, FL, where he attended grade school and graduated from Wildwood High School in 1937.
He owned and operated several successful businesses in Ocala, including Bob Wines Marine Service which he established on South Pine Avenue in 1950. In 1953, he started Bob-A-Dean Nursery, now Bob Wines Camellia Gardens and Nursery on Southeast 38th Street. He was one of the founders of the Ocala Camellia Society in the mid-1950's. Known-nationally for his expertise in raising award-winning native Florida plants, Mr. Wines sold his prize camellia and azalea collection to the Norris Cattle Company which they used in their original floral design at Rainbow Springs and Homosassa Springs. His specimen plants are still a major attraction at these state parks.
He was a fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman, who founded the Ocala Boat Club in the 1950's. Using his many contacts in the marine industry, he made arrangements for the exclusive use of Johnson Outboard Motors and Cartercraft Boats at Silver Springs in their water show activities more than 60 years ago.
One of his many hobbies was that of a "rock hound." He enjoyed collecting and setting rare and unusual gemstones and continued to do so well into his 90's.
Bob Wines, Sr., is survived by his wife of 74 years, Adean; one son, Robert Wines, Jr. (Mary) of Ocala; two granddaughters, Bobbye Lynn Wines and Maryanne Wines-Nowlan (Michael) and a great-granddaughter Harper Rae Nowlan, all of Ocala.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 1, 2013, 3:00 pm at the Community Presbyterian Church in America on Christian Hill, Highway 441 South, McIntosh, conducted by Rev. Jim Walkup and Rev. Scott A. Simmons. Interment will be at 11:00am, Monday, June 3, 2013, at the Adamsville Cemetery, Coleman FL.
