Stuart Greenfield Obituary

Dr. Stuart Charles Greenfield
Born: March 23, 1967 in Freeport, Illinois
Died: May 17, 2024 in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin
Dr. Stuart Charles Greenfield, 57, of Boulder Junction, WI, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on May 17th from a heart attack. Stuart was born March 23, 1967, in Freeport, the son of Loran and Judy (Ross) Greenfield. Stuart was the oldest of 4 sons and grew up in Forreston, IL, enjoying small town life with family and friends. His legendary sense of humor was loved by all he met. Every year when the family vacationed to Northern Wisconsin, Stuart's love of the area grew leading to his goal of someday retiring "Up North" with a lake home.
He was extremely academically gifted and after graduation from Forreston High School in 1985, he went on to earn a B.S. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. He then furthered his education by earning a PhD. in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University. Later in life, he also earned an M.B.A. in Business Administration from Xavier University. When nieces and nephews needed help with math homework, they were told to call Uncle Stu.
After earning his PhD., Stuart worked for GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati, OH, as a Lead Engine Systems and Combustor Design Engineer. Upon completing his M.B.A., he then moved to Denver, CO, to work as Business Manager/CFO for Rhythms Net Connections. Finally, he finished his career with Constellation Energy in Baltimore, MD holding Director and Manager titles in areas of Accounting and Business Processes.
Preferring flannel shirts over business attire, he fulfilled his life goal by retiring at age 45 to his cabin on Island Lake of the Manitowish Chain. There he lived his ideal life of fishing, snowmobiling, wildlife photography, and watching sports and CNBC. His love of history was apparent through his large collection of Forreston, Northern Wisconsin, and World War II memorabilia. His legacy was built on the memories he made with family and friends who would come and visit. Stuart was extremely community oriented, as all who knew him came to love and respect him. Stuart was always sending pictures and stories from the lake to his family and friends allowing them to remotely participate in his many adventures of the day. Whenever they came to visit, he was always ready to make sure they had a great time and left with another set of fond memories. He was a talented fisherman who loved the sport, but equally loved passing along his knowledge to family and friends – except for his secret spots on his secret lakes with his secret lures. He loved his life in the North Woods.
Stuart is survived by his mother and father Loran and Judy Greenfield of Forreston, IL, brother Jon Greenfield of Apple Valley, MN, brother Andrew (Jennifer) Greenfield of Beverly Farms, MA, and brother Joshua Greenfield of Baileyville, IL. He was an amazing uncle to his nieces Emma, Lila, Ella, Mya and Bryn and nephews Noah (Sophia), Jordan, and Austin. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Alivia Greenfield.
The visitation will be held on Monday, May 27, 2024, from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Forreston Grove Church in Forreston, IL with a private family funeral service immediately following. Pastor Lyle Greenfield will officiate. Burial will be at Forreston Grove Church cemetery. A memorial is being established in his name.

Stuart had a great start having close friends, who were like family in small town Forreston, Illinois. From kindergarten to eighth grade we were true friends. I left High School my sophomore year and went to Aquin in Freeport Illinois schools. I could never forget Stuart and his family, we all loved our school smart, bright, kind, humorous buddy! We all knew Stuart had a future of intelligence, so we watched him through classes on top of all subjects. He was a terrific big brother and loved so many people. Miss you Stu, thanks for many happy friendly years. Your class pal, Kristin always and truly!

In the summer of 2008, Stuart, his brother Andrew and his parents Loran and Judy visited the Groeneveld/Greenfield family reunion in East Friesland (Germany) - the home of their great-great-grandparents. On the first day there was a nice family reunion with relatives from Germany, the Netherlands and the USA. The next day we made a nice round trip through East Frisia. It was wonderful and we had a lot of fun. A few weeks later Stuart wrote me a nice letter thanking me for a "once in a lifetime experience". I was very happy about that. Stuart was a nice guy.

I loved my time fishing with Stu, and a better person I've never known. Buckshot Anderson, age 87, retired educator and fishing guide for 60 years. Stu also bought all 19 of my published books about the Northwoods and fishing. The world lost a great person!

Stuart will be so missed - I cannot imagine boating over to Island Lake or going to Loon Days or the Pea Patch in Mani Wats and not keeping my eye out for him - we always seemed to run into each other and that always made our day. God did not make a sweeter human being - Stu was in our wedding and always made sure he and Jer connected when he was home over the holidays - life will surely be duller here on earth but brighter up in the north woods sky - Love you much Stu - until we meet again !!!
