Alice J. Sharkey

Alice J. Sharkey Alice J. Sharkey, 70, passed away Sept. 26, 2011 after several years battling lymphoma and a 15 year battle with scleroderma. She passed peacefully at the Ridgewood Road Hospice Center. Alice was born in Akron June 13, 1941. She was a graduate of Kenmore High School and received her Bachelor's of Science from The University of Akron. She taught for 35 years for the Akron Public Schools. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority and was past president of the College Club of Akron. Alice was Building Teacher of the Year with the General Assembly of the Ohio Senate, received Governor's recognition for the ``Ohio Reads' program and was Akron Public Schools Building Teacher of the Year, along with many other awards for excellence in teaching. Alice was a member of St. Hilary Catholic Church, where she was a member of the RCIA team and Faith Alive Retreat team. She will be remembered for her love of cooking, baking, gardening, flowers and entertaining many friends and family in her home, as well as outings with her son and friends. She is survived by son, Robert G. Sharkey; sister, Cynthia (Bob) Price; sister-in-law, Tanie White; three nieces, a nephew, two great-nieces and four great-nephews, and many loving cousins, a dear aunt and many devoted friends. She was preceded in death by husband, Robert G. Sr. and parents, Steve and Helen Virostko. Calling hours 5 to 8 p.m. TODAY at the Ciriello and Carr Fairlawn Chapel, 39 S. Miller Rd. Mass of Christian Burial 9:30 Friday at St. Hilary Catholic Church, followed by entombment at Rose Hill Cemetery, PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH.
