Today is the first day of Black History Month. Meet Ms. Florence Helena Sturkey. She was my 7th grade Language Arts teacher (school yearbook picture). Ms. Sturkey was an educator, advocate, inspirer...and so much more. She was always my teacher, and later my mentor and adult friend. She completed her Earthwork in 2013. Her lessons stretched far beyond the classroom and continue to travel across many years. I am a better human because of her. She pushed me beyond my comfort zone. A comfort zone can be a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there. "The learning process is something you can incite, literally incite, like a riot." (Audre Lorde) Thank you Ms. Sturkey. I say your name. I relish the time we shared. (The 2nd photo Ms. Sturkey sent to me via text after voting in the November 2012 Presidential Election.)

I remember Flo's super-bright smile and worldly optimism she projected each day. She most elegantly (yet subtly) put us all in touch with upper-academia as if we were all headed STRAIGHT INTO COLLEGE the very next day ( whether we had plans to or not ! ) Truly a great inspiration to us all and will be missed by this former student of hers from Revere High School so many decades past. "May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." (That's Shakespeare, you know - - from her English class !) David Keller

My heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to Ms. Sturkey's family and friends. I was very saddened to hear of her passing. I've thought of Ms. Sturkey so often over the years, as I've always remembered her as one of my favorite teachers from the Copley school system.
I was in her 6th grade, 1983-84, English class at Copley Middle School. Not only did I take away a new found love of literature and reading, but will always recall the type of strong, articulate, and independent woman she was; the likes of which I had not quite experienced before. She taught me to think on an independent level. She conveyed to our class that we were all smart and capable students. It was a matter of how one chose to apply one's self, and carry one's self through life. I took away from her class that year how to express my opinions, how to stand up for my thoughts and ideas, but most importantly, how to do so with intelligence, grace, and compassion. I am now working a little bit everyday at passing on the impact she made on my life and character to my 5 1/2 year old twin girls.
I will always think of Ms. Sturkey fondly, knowing how she touched my life, and lives of so many others.

My love, respect and deepest condolences to the Sturkey family. Although I was never in Flo's classroom I was always a student of hers, and she never let me forget it. The lady that taught me how to shake hands in front of the house on Pitkin continued to "keep an eye" on me, and she will never leave my memory.
Let the knowledge that Flo rests in the hand of God be a comfort to you all.

To the Sturkey family; My first encounter with Ms. Sturkey was in 7th grade English at Copley Jr. High School. As I entered the classroom she looked at me smiling and said, "Hello Ms. Hale I know we won't have a problem!" I thought all day what she was referring. I went home and my mom asked me how I liked middle school and I began to tell her everything. I told her what Ms. Stukey had said and then she began to laugh. I wanted to know what was funny and she informed me that Ms. Sturkey is her best friend from grade school. I knew then that I wouldn't be getting away with anything. Ms. Stukey always treated me as any other student and gave me a constant reminder of where she and my mom came from and to push harder to succeed to be better than they were and bring a positive outcome to others. When I returned to Copley to assist in the Disability unit I visited Ms. Sturkey and she gave to me these words of advice,"As I have given unto you now you must give unto others. Much given much is required!" Those are words that I live my life by and Ms. Sturkey you will always be remembered as a leader and great motivation in my life. Rest In Peace! Forever your student! Ms. Sturkey was one of my favorite teachers and someone I will always remember fondly. In 7th grade English, I learned not only grammar and writing skills but the deductive reasoning of Sherlock Holmes that I use today when scoring grant applications for affordable housing. Ms. Sturkey was also a friend who took me to Inverness Capers meetings and a wonderful excursion to London and Oxford. I will miss the Christmas card signed, "always, your Ms. Sturkey."

Long before the phrase, "No child left behind," became popular, Helena embraced that belief. She reached out not only to the academically gifted but also to those some might consider marginal students. She was a dedicated and dynamic teacher who influenced all who knew her. She taught much more than English. Thinking of her family and all her friends with sympathy and understanding. Rest in peace, Helena.

Flo, I 've had a few days to reflect on a lifetime of having a 'big' sister that was truly that in so many significant ways! The neverending support through all of my academic and professional pursuits; the drop-off lunches at the office to try "something new that I just found." And the 'memorable list' is endless. Thanks so much for putting youself into a very tough position when we lost Pop, when we were all so very young. For being a great support to Mom as she lived out her life infirmed physically, but very rich both interpersonally and spiritually. Thanks for the $20 you'd send to me while I was in college, and you'd say it was from Mom- I'd make that $20 stretch a long way back then! And the graduations! First from Walsh Jesuit, then Stuebenville College, and finally The Ohio State University Dental School. Those educational benchmarks meant alot to all of us, but I know, as an educator, you took great satisfaction in them. Glad I was a small part of that!
And, as I have seen in my dental practice over the years, so many parents and their kids, have come in sharing their 'memorable list' with me about their educational experiences that they had with you. I of course smile a knowing smile, and say, "yes, I know exactly what you mean!"
Say 'hi' to Mom and Pop for me. Can't wait to hear these stories in Glory!
Your loving brother, Dr Bob Sturkey

When I sat in Ms Sturkey's classroom 33 years ago, I had no idea how much she would impact my life. I was 12 years old, and this was my first Junior High experience. How a teacher can change a life is beyond measure!!!! Ms. Sturkey is why I became a teacher. She taught me to be loving, strong, and accepting of others.
