Gwen N. Bartlo (nee Norwich), age 89, of Naples, Fla. and formerly Hudson, Ohio, beloved wife of Sam D.; loving mother of Paul (Anne Pitkin), Peter, Kent (Kimberly), and Daniel (Gayle) Bartlo; dear grandmother of Matt, Christopher, Jennifer, Bret, Wendy, and Christopher Bartlo; dear sister of the late Adam Norwich, Jr., Regina Sawicki, and Eleonore Peltz, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008.
Gwen was born in Rochester, N.Y. on January 2, 1919 where her dear father, Adam Norwich, owned a men's clothing manufacturer. The family was active in local affairs and Gwen often reminisced about her childhood living in their grand home, now a convent, often filled with notable houseguests such as the concert pianist and former President of Poland, Ignace Paderewski. The family eventually moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Gwen graduated from Notre Dame College for Women with honors. While attending John Adams High School in Cleveland, Gwen met her future and much beloved husband, Sam Bartlo. They were married in Cleveland in 1943 which commenced 65 years together sharing a rich and rewarding life. One of Gwen's favorite activities was traveling with her husband around the world. Together they visited 36 countries and all five continents. Her most cherished moments included a private visit with the Pope Paul VI. Gwen's great wit and friendly nature will be missed by her many friends and loving family.
The family suggests Memorial Contributions can be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, 340 N. Dear Peter, Mr, Bartlo, Paul, Kent, Dan & Families,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the death of your Wife, Mother and Grandmother. I remember her as a really nice woman who cared deeply about her husband and children. I know how difficult this is for all of you ( I lost my Mom in January ) and I wanted you to know you are in my thoughts and prayers at this time. Someone once told me memories are like stars in the deep night of sorrow. May your Mom's shine brightly for all of you. Hold tight to them and they will give you strength.
Sincerely,
