Isabelle George Obituary

Isabelle A. George (nee David) died at the age of 101, on January 15, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Edward; her parents, Marie and Joseph David, and eight siblings. Born on 8/23/1911, she was the oldest daughter of 13 children of Lebanese immigrants. She married Edward George, founder of Tangier Restaurant, in 1938 and had eight children: Edward (Cindy), David (Rita), Alice Viviano (Tony), Paula Thomas (Sam), Mary Jane Thomas (Tony), Linda Zamora (Danny), Robert, Sandra Boarman (Dan). She also leaves behind brothers, John (Marci), Raymond, Tom, and Robert (Carolyn), and sister-in-law, Carol David (Paul). She will be deeply missed by her 35 loving grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren. In addition to raising her large family, she managed the office at Tangier Restaurant for 40 years. She was a devout Catholic who cherished her years as a parishioner at St. Vincent Parish. She loved to play cards, listen to beautiful music, and make wonderful meals for all who came to her home. She had an open heart for everyone she met and was loved and admired by those who knew her even for a short time. She worked diligently and without fanfare all of her life to provide care and guidance to her large family. She approached her death with humility, grace and dignity, always maintaining her most cherished role in life, that of mother and grandmother.

We are so grateful to her amazing caregivers, and also to Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service for everything they did to make Mom's last months comfortable and surrounded by her family.

Calling hours will be at Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 39 S. Miller Rd., Fairlawn, on Thursday, January 17, from 3 until 8. Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent Catholic Church, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations may be made to Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service on Ridgewood Road and to St. Vincent Catholic Church.

Our family lived next door to the Georges, and The Phillip George family became dear friends of ours still. I remember “Aunt Isabelle” and the beautiful grounds of her “estate” on Portage Path she so graciously allowed us to play on. But a particular day, while we were using some words that she didn't like, and we had no business using at our age, she summoned us to the stoop on the side of the house, and proceeded to sprinkle red cayenne pepper on our tongues. She then told us that the heat we felt and tasted was from the Devil, and the words we were saying were his, and we should remember the fire that those words brought, and never use them again! What a lesson to a little kid! I am 52 years old now, and I will always remember the lesson taught to me by “Aunt Isabelle”. That memory is so stuck in me, that every time I taste cayenne pepper I now remember her words fondly!
