James Guest Obituary

KENMORE – James B. Guest, 64, passed away on November 2, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. A proud father, grandfather, and uncle, Jim loved his family and playing his saxophone. His other passions were handball and landscaping.

Jim played with many bands, too many to list. He was a long-time member of the YMCA, working there for over 10 years. He made many great friends through his favorite sport of handball.

Jim was a Vietnam veteran, serving in Korea. He was an active member of Firestone Park Christian Church. He enjoyed landscaping and was always willing to help friends and neighbors with their improvement projects.

He was preceded in death by his dearly loved parents, Evelyn and Burton Guest. Jim will be greatly missed and always remembered by his son, Ken (Meg) Guest; grandchildren, William and Mackenzie; sister, Barb (Mike) Ligas; niece, Carolyn (Joe) Grimsic; nephews, Michael (Saijal) Ligas and Matthew (Maria) Ligas; and special friend and companion, Theresa Love.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Mr. Tom Strauss, Dr. Trochelman, Dr. Espinal and the entire Summa Health System staff for their excellent care and support. With their help, Jim maintained an active life and enjoyed as much time as possible with his loved ones.

Calling hours will be Sunday, November 6, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Schlup-Pucak Funeral Chapel, 788 Kenmore Blvd., where funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 7, 2011; Reverend Laura Fitt-Baird will officiate. Burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

This is very hard for me, to have lost my best friend too young. Jim would always be there when I needed him. I taught him the great game of handball and we won numerous games playing in tournaments. The handball fraternity will always miss him. He was one of our best !!!

Our hearts were saddened at the news of Jim's passing. I, Connie, go back as far as 4th grade at Margaret Park School. We continued through Innes, Kenmore High when Don came into the picture! Together we made many lasting and fun memories. Jim was a groomsman in our wedding. He and Don played handball and shared other fun exploits of youth! Jim never knew but he has been part of our stories shared with our kids and grandkids of our growing up years, just as recently as this past summer. He has and will remain in our hearts. We are thankful for a treasure of memories. Jim was a faithful and great guy always from childhood on. He stayed true to himself and has left a legacy to many. Our prayers for comfort and peacee to all who mourn, especially his family.

Last night, our entire family went to the first UA basketball game that we could attend - we are season ticket holders.. have been for years. I stuffed my purse with random snacks and headed to the Halloween candy and grabbed a few for our three kids.. I stopped and purposely did not take many as I remembered .. we would be seeing Jim that night. He always attended the games and ALWAYS had a piece of candy ready for my 3 kids. The game started and Jim did not come - friends that sat to the right of Jim for years explained to us that Jim had passed. We are saddened that we did not get to say goodbye to our basketball friend - a man we laughed with, complained with, and celebrated with. Please know your family is in our prayers and although we will miss Jim - we are so happy to have known him.

My family and I have enjoyed Jim's music for years. He and the band even played at one of the surprise Anniversary parties we had for my parents. He would always ask if I wanted to sit in and drum with the band for a few songs and I always enjoyed it. He and his music talents will be missed.

We can't believe he is gone. He was a real friend, he couldn't do enough for us. Jim was the nicest person I have known. He was so dependable, loyal, and hard working. Jim was one of the best handball players in the area and always exhibited great sportsmanship on and off the court.

Maybe you can get a doubles game with Jim Carson, Tony Lasalvia and Doc Freeman.

One of the "good guys" that will be missed.
