James R. Webb, Ph.D., 61, passed peacefully away surrounded by family and friends February 27, 2009.
Born in Granite City, Ill., on April 5, 1947, Jim grew up in Central and Northern Illinois. He received his B.S. and M.B.A. from Northern Illinois University and his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Illinois. He taught at Kent State University, University of Akron, University of Texas, Austin and most recently at Cleveland State University. He was also Director of the Real Estate Institute at C.S.U. Jim loved teaching, research and mentoring. He was recognized as an outstanding scholar and the most prolific American researcher in Real Estate journals for a number of years.
Jim was a founding member of the American Real Estate Society (ARES), the premier Real Estate research organization in the world. He is a past president and executive director of ARES and was recently honored by the Society by having the Foundation named after him. The Foundation helps Real Estate Ph.D. students in many ways. He was an avid reader and amateur philosopher. Jim was an enthusiastic horticulturist and shared a love for all plants and flowers. He could be seen gardening at his Hudson home and around the Chadds Ford neighborhood just about every weekend, employing the neighbor kids. Most importantly, though, Jim loved his family! He was proud of his children, wife, nieces and nephews, referring to them often in his lectures for levity. Jim will be sorely missed by family, students, and colleagues.
Jim is survived by his wife of 30 years Anais (nee Brown); sons, Clinton of Chicago, Ill., and Stuart of Durham, N.C.; daughter, Carissa of Hudson; brothers, Dr. Daniel (Lety) Webb of Rockford, Ill., and Gary of Indiana; nieces, Lyndsay and Kelsey Webb and Sunita Brown; nephews, Daniel and Peter Brown; father-in-law, Thomas E. (Pat) Brown; sisters-in-law, Beth (Bill) Bennett and Annette (Charles) Richards of Aurora, in addition to very special friends Mary and Mark Gorman.
Friends may call Sunday 6 to 8 p.m. at Evangelical Covenant Church of Hudson, 190 W. Streetsboro Road, Hudson, Ohio, where Pastor Stan will conduct service Monday at noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to James R. Webb Foundation of American Real Estate Society (ARES), 10806 River Terrace, Austin, TX 10806 or Children International, P.O. Box 219055, Kansas City, Missouri 64121, www.childrens.org. (REDMON, STOW, 330-688-6631).

My deepest condolences for the irreparable loss of Dr. Webb. It has taken me so long to express my thoughts because I am lost for words. My eyes are overflowing with tears as I write.
He was a very dear and faithful friend to me. His selflessness was evident in the way he gave out himself to help others. His love and compassion for mankind caused him to reach out to everyone - HE WAS COLOR BLIND!!
Jim! You made me welcome at ARES! You gave me access to invaluable data (which I would not have otherwise obtained) for my research and encouraged me in my research. You have left me in tears, Jim! I should rejoice for all the good things you have done; but even this makes your departure from this world harder to take. You have left this world BUT your memories will live on for many years.
MAY THE GRACIOUS LORD GIVE YOU EVERLASTING REST.

Please accept my deepest sympathies.
I remember Professor James Webb with sincerest fondness. He was a distinctive indivudual with a heart and soul filled with truth, compassion, love, helpfulness and generosity. He reached out to any friends across the world like me with his very frequent gracious and disarming smile. He always gave his friends the benefit of the doubt, and he was always helpful in his scholarly and research advice, comments and sharing. Truly, Professor James, was a scholar, researcher and teacher, who made a lasting impression and role model for many of us who knew him well.

Although I have known Jim for only about 10 years, he had often been like a benevolent uncle to me, offering words of encouragement and advice. His tireless effort and contributions has transformed the real estate faternity to what it is today. Jim, you will be sorely missed!

James Webb: A Life of Significance and Impact:
The Megbolugbe Family joins with very many in celebrating the significant and impactful life lived by Professor Jim Webb. Jim was both a mentor and a special friend to Isaac. Apart from teaching and doing research, Jim and Isaac shared a common passion/interest for investigating answers to basic questions of life. Jim was more of a philosopher than Isaac. It was always a joy for me to observe both engage in passionate exchange of views about issues that are too abstract to sustain my interest.
My family has fond memories of visiting the Webb family in Ohio and their subsequent visit to Maryland twice. The ARES conferences were always extra special because of the presence of the Webb family, not to mention the fun time the children had whenever our families were together.
I am eternally grateful to the Web family for gracing Isaac’s “surprise” 50th birthday celebration in 2002 in Maryland. It made the birthday extra special for Isaac! It was indeed a thrill for Isaac to have the Web family be a part of the celebration.
Thank you Jim for trying extra hard to get my husband interested in gardening. I remembered your visit with Isaac to the local nursery during your family’s visit to Maryland, where you taught Isaac how to select, plant, and care for daffodil/tulip bulbs.
I could not forget the fishing lessons Jim gave to Isaac and me during our visit with your family in Hudson. Our family had a wonderful memorable time together.
Anais, be comforted knowing that your husband invested in so many lives that will continue to yield eternal returns of goodwill and relationship benefits to you and the children for years to come. My family will hold on to these wonderful memories of your husband and his nurturing personality as a reminder of the many special ways he touched our lives. Isaac is still beside himself. I know a part of him has been lost as a result of the home going of Jim. Our God is the Lord of widows and children of widows. Our prayer is that the LORD will continue to watch over you and your children (Clinton, Stuart & Carissa). Jim watched over many lives and careers while he was with us. Christ is the resurrection and the life. Because Christ lives, we can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fears are gone. We rejoice in our belief that one day we shall all see Jim again in Heaven.
With Love,
Josephine Megbolugbe

Jim was both a mentor and a special friend. Apart from teaching and doing research, Jim and I shared a common passion for books and botany. The following quote by Alexander Smith reminded me so much of Jim:
"In my garden I spend my days; in my library I spend my nights. My interests are divided between my geraniums (in Jim’s case, daffodils) and my books. With the flower I am in the present; with the book I am in the past. I go into my library, and all history unrolls before me."
Wee Lih and I have fond memories of visiting Jim twice during our sabbatical in the US. We had a wonderful time fellowshipping with Jim and Anais. We saw a different side of Jim – his more relaxed and witty side! I specially remember the visit to the local nursery in autumn, where Jim taught me how to select and plant tulip/daffodil bulbs. Also, during the spring, Jim so enthusiastically drove me around the neighborhood, giving me a crash course on ornamental plants.
Anais, our prayers are with you and your children (Clinton, Stuart & Carissa). Christ is the resurrection and the life. Because Christ lives, we can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fears are gone. One day we shall see Jim again in Heaven.
With Love,

My deepest condolences to the Webb family.
I have many great memories of working with Dr. Webb both in his yard and around the neigborhood. I could always count on Dr. Webb for great conversation about virtually any subject...politics, philosophy, current events, and life and general as we spent time trimming hostas and planting trees. I was fortunate enough to have spent this time with him and definetely learned a lot. I do still feel bad about bending his pick axe in half though!
My thoughts go out to Mrs. Webb, Clint, Stu, and Carissa. I'm very sorry for your loss. Dr. Webb will be missed by many.

Dear Anais and Family, Please accept the deepest sympathies from Shiwen and me.
Dr. Webb, as I had always called him when we talk, was the first person I met from CSU. We had talked frequently since then and the topic he enjoyed the most was the families and kids. His smile and happiness are obvious when he recalled how the kids welcomed him back home from work by running round him in circles.
Dr. Webb offered me, the only junior faculty in the Finance department, many professional advices. He had helped me proof-edit several manuscripts. Before the surgery, he even asked sending him more manuscripts so that he won't be bored when he is recovering.
Dr. Webb, you will be missed dearly.

Jim was a great intellect, teacher, philospher and human being. I knew him from his days at Kent State. I owe him a great deal since he helped me get a number of scholarships which were the only things that permited me to stay in college. He had a great sense of humor and many years latter when we met, he reminded me of the tennis shoes I wore in college that were tapped together with adhesive tape.
I also remember how happy he was awaiting the birth of his children.

Dr. Webb was a great mentor to me and truly instrumental in my career. But more than that, Jim was a great friend. I have much love for him and his wonderful family. I keep picturing him with Ryan (Michael’s and my son) on our summer 2007 visit to Ohio - we had such a great time visiting. The Webb family is in my prayers. I hope that God will grant you peace and bring you comfort during this difficult time. Although it brings us all great sadness that he is gone, I hope you find solace in knowing the Jim is with God in heaven and that his legacy lives on in all of the many lives he has touched.

Dear Anais and Webb Family,
Jim was a true visionary. His concept of a Real Estate Society that brought academics and practitioners together was such a success that it now spans continents and counts its members in the thousands. He leaves a legacy of scholarship, friendship and leadership that will live on and on. Jim's contributions to real estate education, research and professional practice are legendary. But, when I think of how he spoke of his family, you should know that he was so proud of all of you. Jim drew great strength from his faith and from the love of his family. And in this way, he remains an inspiration to us all. The best wishes, thoughts and prayers of legions of real estate researchers are with the Webb family as you gather to celebrate Jim's amazing life.

Dr. Webb was the most accomplished real estate professional that I have ever known. But what made him so special was his ability to motivate and challenge anyone, whether or not that person was already a Ph. D. or someone just trying to pass an undergraduate finance class. He saw the potential in everyone he interacted with, and was able to bring all of us to a higher level.
Now it is up to all of us to continue his legacy.
My deepest condolences to his family. You are in my prayers.

Anais, Clint, Stuart & Carissa,
Our deepest and most sincere sympathies. Please take some comfort in that the many outpourings of wishes and condolences in the weeks and months to come represent but a small fraction of the people whose careers and, more importantly, lives where deeply and positively influenced by Jim. As you know so well already, he was a teacher in the best sense of the word – both in and outside the classroom. To his enduring credit, he took it upon himself to share his talents and insights with so many; he will be greatly missed.
Finally, should you need something/anything, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

I worked in the College of Business for a few years and Dr. Webb was the greatest. I worked in the Word Processing area in UC at that time and I worked personally with him doing secretarial work for his Real Estate. I’d like to offer my sincerest and deepest sympathies to the Webb family. Professor Webb’s demise is a tremendous loss to all of us – he was a great teacher, mentor, coauthor, and friend. He deeply touched and impacted the lives of so many individuals. I worked as his research assistant (early 1990s), took his real estate doctoral seminar class, and attended research seminars that he put together for us. Over the years, our relationship of a student-mentor grew to that of a friend and colleague. I spent a few days at the Webbs’ home in Summer ’06 and enjoyed their warmth and hospitality. He shared books that he was reading, exchanged research ideas, and talked about how proud he was of his children. Our last conversation was about a research paper that we were working together. If I only knew that this was going to be my last goodbye, I wonder if I could have said something different or talked about things that were perhaps more important; but then again research was always an important aspect of his life. A true scholar and a gentleman, and a giant in the profession!

Dear Anais and Family,
Dr. Webb was not only my mentor but a true friend. He introduced me to the field of real estate finance while a student at CSU, helped me jump start my publishing career, and guided me and my career at LaSalle over the years. I will never forget him or the impact he had on my life.

Dr. Webb taught me more than any other professor I had in college. Not just about finance, but about the real world. He genuinely cared about his students and went out of his way to help them get interviews, find jobs and develop the necessary skills and experience to be successful. As his former students and colleagues can attest to, the world could use a few more Dr. Webbs. He will be missed.

Dr. Webb was a man of vision and integrity who was instrumental in allowing me the privilge of teaching real estate courses at Kent State University for 25 years as a part-time temporary instructor. They were the best 25 years of my life and I owe that to Dr. Webb. A day did not pass while I was there that I did not think of him with gratitude and fondness. The world is greatly diminished with his passing. My deepest sympathies to Dr. Webb's family and all of us who share this loss.
