Deputy John K. Mapel

Deputy John K. Mapel, 55, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Dec. 27, 2003, after a brave fight with leukemia. He went to prepare a place for his wife, "Buds" of 36 years and all his family.

John retired from a 30-year career at Reiter Dairy. He then fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming a deputy sheriff for Summit County, a job that he loved.

Preceded in death by his father, Stanley; grandparents, Ray and Madie Mapel; and brother, Robert, he is survived by wife, Barb; son, Mark (Hei di); daughter, Lynn (Charles) Moon; brother, David; four grandchildren, Chelsea, Dylan, Allison and Joey; mother, Evelyn Molnar; special sister-in-law, Linda Watts, mother-in-law, Lorene Farnsworth; many other relatives and our precious dog, "Joe."

Funeral service Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. at the Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkey foot Lake Rd., (Route 619), with Rev. Kim Lawrence officiat ing. Calling hours Tuesday, 4 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia or the American Cancer Society. Barb, Lyn, Mark: I was so shocked about John's death. None of his friends at Reiter knew he was sick. As always, I wish I would've taken the time to visit, call, or just let him know I was thinking of him, but as we get older, it seems we're so busy. I regret that now. I'll always remember the fun times our kids and your kids had growing up with the bees, and pigs, and weenie roasts, and happy times. I still share memories from time to time with my kids. I will never forget my friend, John Mapel.

John and I were best friends at "Springfield Central", the old junior high school. We were a famous (infamous) duo and had the most "whacks" of any student before or since 1961! John once turned in his desk during a science test to play tic-tac-doe on my paper so we would be able to sign Mr. Carl Bohn's paddle! I have hundreds of memories of our fun together. We taught each other how to cross one eye and keep the other looking straight ahead. The other students liked us and looked forward to our hand-written comedic "Bedrock Bugle" newspapers we authored. John even did a comic strip based on his character "Clowny Pebblenose"! We even ran for Class President and Vice President, so we weren't "bad" kids.

I moved away in high school, but I did look John and Barb up after I was discharged from the Army. If I recall correctly, John was trying to get on the Akron Fire Department at that time.

How ironic that he worked at Reiter Dairy and I was a patrolman for Barberton Police Department. He could have ridden with me some nights. Heck, he might have even hired on. I never knew of his love for law enforcement and I regret not staying in touch. I retired in 1998 and moved to the Sunshine State.

I will truly miss you, John. I have thought of you often and I still tell John Mapel stories to my family and friends.

God Bless you Barb, Mark, Lynn, Evelyn and the rest of his family and friends. Dave - do you remember when John and I visited you after your double hernia surgery? We brought a coloring book and crayons, then after we left, we climbed up the roof in back of the hospital and peeked in your window to catch you coloring! I think you split some stitches!

John and I worked the "13" (thats cop talk for extra job) at the South plaza. I and the other deputies that worked the 13 did not know of John's medical condition. He never slacked in his duties and all of the merchants at the plaza injoyed his friendship and professionalism when he was walking his beat. I will miss John and so will the Deputies of the Summit County Sheriff's Office He was a Pro at his job.

I had the pleasure of knowing John since 1970 we both had started working at Reiter Dairy. John was such a great person to be around, I treasure the years we worked together. I did not know John Mapel long, but what I did know about him, he was a wonderful, caring,loving man. He loved his job and family very much.

You know, we sure could use more people like John Mapel in this world, it would be a better place to live that is for sure.

I only had the pleasure of knowing John when he worked part time at Class Machine. He was a very plesent gentleman to be around and I am sure he was nice to everyone. I am sorry that he is gone and I know he will be missed by everyone.

Barb: We were absolutely stunned to read of John's passing. He stopped by to see Bill at work earlier this year and didn't elude to the fact that he was sick, but he did mention that he had never been happier in his work. I will always remember bowling, bonfires in your back yard, beaching it in Florida, and corn for buchaneer. Thanks for your friendship and take care.
