John Stover Obituary

John Dennis Stover, Sr. "Smokey"

John Dennis Stover, Sr., 92, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 1, 2014.

John was born May 25, 1922 in Gilmer County, Georgia. He was a cherished, down-home soul who quietly loved his family and friends. He was strong in his faith and enjoyed working in his yard, gardening, fishing, Hartville Flea Market, yard sales, and showing a few special tricks to all he met. He was a member of the Greatest Generation and our hero who served in the Army at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, HI during the Warld War II attack on Pearl Harbor where he shot at low flying enemy planes with only a pistol and continued to defend the island in the aftermath. John went on to serve courageously in the war for another three years in Australia, Leyte Island, New Guinea and the Philippines. After the war, John went home to Georgia where he met and married the love of his life, Freda Lee Russell. Moving to Akron in 1952 to work in the booming rubber industry, John retired from Firestone after 29 years of service and enjoyed an amazing 33 year retirement.

Together again, John is preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Freda L. Stover; parents, William M. and Nellie M. Stover; son, Donald R. Stover; grandsons, Joshua Stover and Michael Lamb; granddaughter, Melissa Stover; five brothers and four sisters. He is survived by sons, Terry M. (Kathy) Stover, Gary L. (Jacqualine) Stover, Dale E. (Dorothy) Stover, Mark R. (Candace) Stover, John D. (Patricia) Stover, Jr.; daughters, Sandra F. Boone, Brenda K. (Gary) Boarman, and Sherri L. (Shawn) Slonsky; 28 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, L.C. Stover; and sister, Betty (Wally) Greene.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, August 6, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron 44305. Dear Brenda, Gary, and Family,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences for the loss of your father. I'm sorry I never met him but I know from your stories that he was a fine Southern gentleman and a Veteran as was my dear father. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I have very fond memories of Uncle Dennis, he was a great Man, Uncle, and a true American Hero. I really enjoyed just sitting and hearing him share his life experiences, I could sit and listen to him talk for hours. He will be dearly missed. I know he is in a better place now, where he won't have to suffer anymore. I Pray that God will bless his Family, and bring back all the great memories he left behind.

I love and miss all of you, may God bless each of you.

Love, Cousin Wayne Stover

My Beautiful Father,

Words cannot express how much I love you or how much I miss you but I am comforted to know that you are in the Lord's care now. I'm in awe to think of what you had seen and experienced in your lifetime. You were a unique, loving man and I am so incredibly blessed to have had you as my Dad. You will always be my hero.

Your Baby Daughter,
Sherri
