Heaven is a better place as of Wednesday, June 24th, when Lorena P. Boyer moved on to her new home there.
She was born on January 29, 1928 in Russell Springs, Kentucky, lost her mother, Sara Garner in 1929, and was raised by her father, George and her sisters. She came to Akron as a young woman and worked for a time downtown at Clark"s Restaurant. In 1956 she married George Jacob, the father of her two sons. George died in 1961 of Hodgekin"s disease. In 1963 she married William Boyer to whom she was married until he died in 2007. Lorena dedicated her life to raising her two sons and to working for 40 years with the American Cancer Society in many different capacities, her favorite being patient services, where she so was helpful to people fighting cancer and their families. She fought this disease until the end of her life, even agreeing to an experimental treatment for her own leukemia, trying to help the doctors find ""the cure"". Lorena also served the Copley School System as a crossing guard for many years at Herberich School. She loved both jobs but most of all she loved people, and everyone who met her loved her. She was known for her honesty but it was never brutal honesty. She would never want to hurt anyone. She was a shining light in this world, not just for her boys but for her loving nieces, especially Janet Smiraldo, her nephews, and her wonderful friends from church and Stewart"s Caring Place.
Lorena was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; her brothers, Vinson, and Vertis Garner; and her sisters, Bonnie Roy, Ruby Holt, and Dora Luttrell. She leaves her sons, George (Lisa) Jacob of Cincinnati, John Jacob of Akron; one granddaughter, Cara Jacob; many nieces and nephews, and many, many faithful friends.
Calling hours will be at Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Friday (TODAY) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 3204 Ridgewood Rd., with Father Lou Mahshie officiating. Entombment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to The American Cancer Society, St. George Church or Stewart"s Caring Place. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)
