Marissa Norwood Obituary

Marissa Alexandra Norwood, age 12, of Akron, who used her courageous battle against brain cancer to inspire others, died peacefully at home Saturday Dec. 19, 2009. Diagnosed in May 2007 with a malignant brain tumor, Marissa kept an upbeat attitude. 'Never give up until life gives you what you want,' she said. While undergoing treatment at Akron Children's Hospital, she was a 'goodwill' ambassador for other young oncology patients. She made public appearances, organized fundraisers and conducted media interviews to draw attention to childhood cancers. 'I don't want to be remembered for having a tumor. I want to be known for helping people despite having a tumor,' Marissa said. A seventh-grader at Litchfield Middle School, she enjoyed math, science and art. She attended the Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research. Compassionate, loving, witty and spunky, Marissa touched everyone she came into contact with. 'I always knew she would make a difference in the world,' said her mother Rosalyn Norwood. 'I just didn't know what road she would take to get there.' Marissa leaves behind 'A Legacy of Kindness' and helping others. In October, she organized a dog-show fundraiser to benefit Akron Children's and the Doggie Brigade. She unselfishly gave away a $5,000 shopping spree from the Make-A-Wish Foundation to purchase gifts for others in need. In honor of her giving spirit, the Akron Police Department Awarded her its 'Do the Right Thing' Award in October. In a letter to Marissa last week First Lady Michelle Obama wrote: 'I want you to know how much I admire your strength. The President and I are touched by your bravery.' Our little angel now has her wings.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her father, Marvin Norwood (Sheila); a brother, Adrian Alati; a sister, LaVonne Christian; maternal grandparents, Patricia and Climon Lee III; great-grandmother, Lillian Lee; uncles, Climon Lee IV (Allyson) and Melvin Norwood, Jr.; aunts, Melanie Burney, Melisa McVay (Michael), Dorothy Newell (Brian), Lawanda Norwood, Patricia Norwood, Melva Williams, and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family extends its appreciation to Akron Children's, Akron Public Schools, St. Vincent Elementary, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Strickland's Ice Cream, and the FOMs (Friends of Marissa) around the country for their prayers, love and support.

Services will be held on Saturday, December 26, 2009 at 12 p.m. at Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, 529 W. Thornton St., Akron, OH 44307, Dr. Dominic Alati officiating. Friends may call at the chapel from 9 a.m. until time of service. Interment at Rose Hill Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 5767. Donations in Marissa's name may be made at any Key Bank branch.

Life is to be cherished no matter how long it lasts. For some the term lifetime extends for decades and for some a lifetime is but a few years. Either way it is to be lived to the fullest. I have no doubt that Marissa lived a full life and cherished every moment of it.

Roz,

I am greatly inspired by your strong and courageous spirit during this time of hardship. Marissa is a beautiful angel that knew without any doubt that she is destined for the kingdom of Yahshua and it is our only hope to have as much love, faith, and confidence in our Father as she has. Marissa couldn’t have asked for a better going home service. What a beautiful angel you have—she is our witness of a true birthed son.

To the family of Marissa Norwood - I read the story about Marissa about a month ago, and it brought me to tears. How proud your family must be that in 12 short years, she accomplished what others fail to do in a full lifetime. May the sweet memories of your time with Marissa here on earth sustain you, and may the knowledge that she is with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ comfort you through this most difficult time.

Roz & Uncle Climon,

We still remember the time we met your beautiful daughter and niece Marissa a couple of years ago at JC Penny's, and are sad to hear about her passing. But, we have faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that she is resting peacefully with Him. In His Word, He reminds us that "When we are absent from the body we are present with Him". Take comfort in knowing that she is at "home", and we as believers will see her again! Be Blessed and know that you are in our prayers!

To the Norwood and Lee families,

My heart was grieved upon learning of Marissa's passing. I thank the Lord for affording me the opportunity to have met such a wonderful young lady. I know that it may be difficult to have joy during this Christmas season, but be encouraged. Marissa gave gifts that will keep on giving, and for that, I believe that God gave her an even better gift, eternal life with His precious Son, Jesus. Look to Him, the real Comforter, during this time. You are in my prayers.

Dear Roz, Marvin and family,

David and I are sending you our deepest sympathy at this time. It is always so profoundly sad when a child passes away, because we always feel that they did not have a chance to make their mark in life. Roz through your love, dedication and guidance Marissa did just that in the short time that she was here and in spite of all her insurmountable challenges. By reading her Carepages you know that she had an incredible impact on many people you did not even know. Instead of focusing on herself she thought of ways that she could help others and her amazing light will continue to shine and be an inspiration to others.

We will be praying that Yah comfort you during this difficult time.
