I was just recalling a story about my friend and preceptor, Mark Koltnow, as I went to Swensons with my sister a couple weeks ago. Mark taught me so much including the joy of a banana milk shake (who knew it would be better than chocolate?). He also taught me the beauty of humor when treating patients. He was the first one to send me a Christmas card every year. It arrived the day after Thanksgiving. I miss his first Christmas card. I miss Mark. Every time I have a banana milk shake, I send a toast of thanks to my dear friend and mentor. I'll see you when I get to heaven Mark.

I just found out that Dr. Koltnow passed away last August, today. It is with a heavy heart I write this, and I send my sincerest condolences to his family.
I was a patient of his. He was an extraordinary person, an excellent Dr. and an inspiration to all who crossed his path.

Sarah and Adam, I have to say that I had a moment when I was doing my Christmas cards this year and realized that I was not going to see that familiar handwriting from your dad nor would I be sending a card to him. It's a sad time for all of us, and especially for you and your family. However, we can be comforted by the thoughts of a life well lived and the love he shared with so many. May God Bless your holidays and grant you His perfect peace.

Sara and Adam, After reading Carol's message, I too, was reminded that my first Christmas card was always from your Dad. You are in my thoughts and prayers as you spend your first Christmas without your Dad. I am sure he is watching over you and his beloved grandchildren and will be their guardian angel. He was loved and is missed by many.

I was very saddened to realize why my first Christmas card this year did not come from my old buddy, Mark Koltnow. As a Family Practice resident at Summa, Mark taught me how to remove ingrown toenails while showing me how to be a good doctor. He also gave me my first experience at Swenson's drive-in restaurant and he showed me that humor can help relieve sadness; hence the horse named Alimony Bill or Bill, for short. Mark was the first to send me a card when I was recovering from surgery. I wish I could have been there for him and I hope he did not suffer. My prayers go out to all of you in this holiday season and always.

To Mark's Family and Reed;
I was privileged to have been taught as a Resident and seen as a patient by Mark. His gentle, conversational manner was something which I tried to emulate with my patients later, and which I appreciated when I was the patient! He took care of my parents as if they were his own. We will all miss him ,

Well...we called to make an appointment, and after the initial shock wore off there was sadness and then smiles. You couldn't help but smile when you went to see Dr. Koltnow...everyone has said it and it was so true. He always welcomed you as if you were truly a "friend" not a patient. He loved to talk and you soon found yourself discussing anything and everything. I loved hearing about his interests...and he had many. One of my first visits to his office...I ended up being handed a camera and he asked me to take a picture of all of them together. I wish I could remember why...but it escapes me right now.
Any way...I could go on and on...but we send our condolences and prayers and we will both miss him a lot! Sorry you had to leave us so soon.

I only just found out Mark passed away, and it breaks my heart. He was a phenomenal doctor, and even though my appointments with him were often physically painful, I never dreaded them, even as a child. He was a good, gentle man who always made me smile. I haven't seen him in years, but I often think of him fondly.

Sara and Adam,
Our hearts are still aching with the loss of our long-time beloved friend. He was such a presence in our lives. I knew him as an orderly at ACH and Doug seems to have known him just as long--he can't remember when they first met. He introduced us and was proud of that fact until the day he left us. Like you, there will always be an empty space in our lives now that he has gone.

Mark treated four generations of my family. When I was a teenager he brought me to his office and into surgery to observe. I am a paramedic and an instructor, and the lessons he taught me then serve my patients and students well now. Mark was the classic gentleman, physician and surgeon. We love and miss you, Dr. Koltnow.

A horse named Fleck of Irish brought Dr. Koltnow and I together. I was just a teenager, and when he found out I was interested in science and medicine he routinely invited me to his office and the operating room to see patients and learn what it is to be a physician.
Later when I was working my way through college and needed a podiatrist Dr. Koltnow saw me half a dozen times, but I never received a bill.
A kind and generous man, Dr. Koltnow always gave more than he took. He certainly helped to shape the trajectory of my life. The moments I spent alongside him are and will remain cherished.
My heart goes out to his family, the ladies in the office, his friends and all of those he touched.

I had the great pleasure of being a long time friend/patient of Mark's. I am having a difficult time believing he is gone. He spoke with such pride of the two of you and you could see the joy in his eyes at the mention of grandchildren. He was soft spoken and a good man at heart always ready to share a Diet Coke and a story. I am so sorry for your loss. He will be sadly missed.

The lovely obituary said it all..Mark's legacy is his practice and how he treated those he met. He was such a good podiatrist, I didn't have to see him often, but when I needed to, he was the only doctor I actually looked forward to seeing, along with his staff that were equally as friendly and caring. We loved sharing train stories; I hope Mark finally rode on one. The world is a bit sadder now with his passing. My condolences to Sara and family.

I first met Mark through his mother, Helen. She was our neighbor, a wonderful woman, and a good friend. We miss her. As many have noted, Mark was kind, compassionate, generous, and very caring. He was a great friend. I was one of his 'train-watching buddies.' Mark once told me that, "Roger, watching trains will be the highlight of your week." He was exactly correct! Going forward, every time I see a train, hear a train horn, or cross over an set of tracks, I'll remember Mark. I will miss him always. Rest in peace, Mark.

To Sara and Adam and their families and all those who knew Mark. He was my doctor and my friend. he treated my mother, my daughter, myself and later, my husband. It seems like I have known him forever. I think he considered all his patients as friends and treated them that way. I remember when Sara worked for her Dad and I got to know her since my daughter and Sara were close in age. She had that same smile as her Dad. He was so proud of his children/grandchildren. I know he will watching over all of you, esp. Jacob and Emma. Nobody will ever fill his shoes. He was a great man and dies way too young. My entire family will miss him.

Mark was my oldest friend. We grew up on Mayfield Avenue together. And we continued our friendship throughout the years. It's a great compliment to his warm, caring, humorous nature to read the many heartfelt tributes he inspired. He was unique--and how rare it is to have someone mean so much to so many people. He loved Akron and kept the old times in his heart. We shared a hundred memories over the years and hoped to share many more. But it's not to be. And his friends and family will miss him deeply: "Oh for the touch of a vanished hand and the sound of a voice that is still."

My entire family and I are so saddened to learn of Dr.Koltnow's illness and passing. He sure was hilarious, no one ever left his office without a smile! My grandmother, Elizabeth "Betty" Farson has been a patient of his for years, they enjoyed many talks together especially about their grandchildren. I called on his office as a pharmaceutical sales rep for many years and found out he was the uncle of one of my dearest college friends, Ethan. He teased me endlessly about being a Miami Hurricane as he couldn't be a prouder Buckeye fan. He was such a caring physician, he even made house calls to my late step-father, Larry Miller when he fell ill. Heaven is a bit brighter and cheerier now that he is there. Our sympathies go out to his entire family, he always beamed about Sara and Adam and his beautiful grandchildren.
August 18, 2010
I am very sad to learn of Dr. Koltnow's passing. I am a medical sales rep that called on his office for about 23 years. I loved when I walked in because Dr. Koltnow was so welcoming.I always felt like I was going to see a good friend. He treated everyone so kind. We would sit in his back office and discuss our cats and politics and laugh! The gals in his office had such a high regard for Mark. He just had a special and caring way about him. My job will never be the same now that I will not have Dr. Koltnow to visit. My deepest sympathy to his family. You are all in my prayers.

I met Mark as a patient in the mid 90s as a pre-med student at The University of Akron. He took the time to get to know me at my first visit and he invited me to "shadow" him. He also invited me into surgery. I guess you can say he had such an influence on me that he mentored me through podiatry school until my graduation in 2002 and completion of my residency in 2005. I now practice podiatry in Pittsburgh and was saddened to hear of the passing of my friend and mentor. He truly cared about people and also I know, as a fellow animal lover, animals. I offer my thoughts and prayers to his family. I know that Dr. Koltnow will always be remembered by me as I continue to strive to care about and take an interest in my patients. If I do it only half as much as he did that would be a great success.

I had the privilage of knowing Dr. Koltnow for the past 12 years while working in the same medical building as him. We had early morning talks, cokes, breaks and after hour talks. Every Tuesday morning he would talk about the adventures of the previous weekend and plans for the following weekend. We were the Ohio sports buddies. We shared the heartbreaks of every loss and cheered with every victory. He also cheerished his family. He would be proud to show the newest pictures of his children and grandchildren. What a proud father and grandfather he was. I will truly miss him and send my condolences to his family, friends and co-workers. I hope it is comforting to know that he touched so many lives.

Our deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Koltnow and his staff also!
As a patient of his, I was shocked to see that he had passed away. I was in his Munroe Falls office just less than 2 yrs. ago, and we shared stories about our grandsons and their love for trains. My husband & I also have a LOVE for those old steam engines, and saw the "Ohio Central" as it passed through Mogadore a couple years back. Dr. Mark said that his buddy actually owned that "steamie", and shared a nice story of his time riding that engine, and how his friend refurbished that train. He indeed was a very caring doctor, and will be sadly missed.
We pray for the ones he left behind, that God will comfort your hearts.

Family, patients, and employees of Mark Koltnow,
Kathy and I are saddened by Dr. Koltnow's passing. Mark, you have been a comforting doctor whom we could also call a dear friend. You always had a great story or joke to tell. I will always remember our chats out the back door of your office. I am so glad that I brought you that homemade chicken noodle soup with thin noodles just like your mother used to make. Had we only known that you were ill, we would have had some chicken soup there for your soul. Kathy enjoyed working with you at The Surgery Center and always cherished your friendship. Sara and Adam, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Sara, Mark often spoke of you. You certainly are the apple of his eye.
Mark, go in peace and know that the world is a friendlier and kinder place for your having passed by this way. Thank you for your great care.
