Dearest Bob:

Today is Veteran's Day 2004. We stand at attention and salute you. We live in a free country because of you and your band of brothers and sisters in our armed services. As we pay respect today, your body rests in a most honorable National Cemetery; your soul is in eternal bliss with our Heavenly Father; memories of you are very much alive in our hearts. Words cannot express how deeply I miss you, my Chappy.

It's so hard to know that Bob's not in our presence anymore, but he will forever be in our hearts. I recently was watching some old home movies (video now, I had them converted over) of when Bob and my brother-in-law (who passed away 9 years ago and Bob was there to the last with us) "Bata Boot" Bennett were in Key West with the Dive School. It was so heart-warming to see their smiles and knowing that they are together again forever...smiling. God Bless Bob, Bill "Bata Boot" Bennett and the families.

Throughout my course of life here on earth, i've never met anyone, nor will ever meet anyone like Mr. Chaplin. He is an individual that valued life itself, and understood the concept of hardwork. I will always remember the best of him, because that is all that i knew of him, he has always been there since i've joined the martial arts, and when i joined the marines, he was and still is a motavating part in my life...i will never forget the times spent with you and the conversations we had, i thank you Mr. Chaplin for being a friend, you will forever be missed....Your friend Ronald Rorie

Six months ago today, you were taken from us, our Chappy.

In some ways, it seems as though you left us just yesterday,

Bob, for the wounds in our hearts are still fresh and sting deeply

over losing you. In other ways, it feels so much longer, since

every day without you feels like forever. When our sorrow seems

overwhelming, we remember the great times with you and treasure

the wonderful memories you built with each one of us. We know

that you are in Heaven and that God is in control of all. As we are

told in our Christian Bible, Matthew 16.27:

For the Son of man is to come with his angels

in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay

every man for what he has done.

Dearest Chappy: Today is Veterans Day. You are deeply loved and missed. I'm sure that you are walking the streets of gold in the presence of our Heavenly Father, smiling your radiant smile and keeping watch over us with your beautiful blue eyes. Every day, I remember you with thanksgiving and prayer. Specially today, I honor you as one of America's wonderful veterans. Your patriotism, love of country, willingness to serve, and sacrifice for us will always be treasured. I miss you, my Chappy!

Bob was a great guy! Used to call him Chappy. Had great times at those tournaments when he was there with me and my family. Especially at Nationals in Texas when I took Gold, and you took me and my family out to dinner at a steak house. Used to call me bud and fixed those Tai dishes especially for me when you knew I was coming over. Those days are gone now, but never forgotten, I hope you are resting in peace, because you sure are missed. Chappy, you were my dads best friend. You treated him like no other did. You guys stuck side by side no matter what happened. It hurts to see you gone and my dad so sad. We really had great times, playing pool together, going out to dinner, going to tournaments, spending New Years together, and etc. I think God was wrong for taking you. You were a kid wrapped inside a older mans body. It wasnt your time. I just dont understand. You were a best friend to my dad, and a great friend to me. I will miss you and always think of you. Rest in peace Bob, and God Bless.

It is truly a sad time for Ohio Taekwondo to lose a man like Bob Chaplin. He was my coach and friend for many years while I was training at IJ Kim Martial Arts. I was 16 years old the summer he coached me to a national victory and later to earning my first degree black belt- neither of which would have been possible without his constant support. I can't begin to count the number of times that I told Bob that I couldn't do it. But every time he looked me right in the face and insisted that, yes I could. He taught me persistance and courage in the face of difficulty. He taught me to never walk away from a fight- to always get back on the horse whenever you fall off. Those strong supportive words still resound in my heart to this day.

Bob you will be greatly missed by my family and I. You taught my brother and I the meaning of hard work and determination. And for that we are all eternally grateful.

Rest in peace now...we love you.

To Bob's family - I just learned of Bob's death and I was very saddened to hear that he passed away. I know how difficult it must be for you and that you must miss him terribly. He was a wonderful man and my husband and I were very grateful for the many contributions he made to the TKD Reporter. He was always enthusiastic and devout to the sport of Taekwondo. Not only have you suffered a big loss, so has the sport of Taekwondo. He will always be missed.

To the chaplin family: I had the pleasure of knowing Chappy for many years and consider him a good friend. I first ment Chappy in scuba school in Oct 1972. It was a difficult time for me due to a few people having trouble with me attending the school. I am an American of African decent and an experienced competitive swimmer, and diver, then and now. One instructor in particular did everything in his power to ensure I would not graduate from the school, even though I was one of the best swimmers in the class. Everyday Chappy would give me words of encouragement and made sure I knew ther where more people who wanted me to graduate than I realized. you have no idea how much his words of encouragement helped me and I never forgot his numerous acts of kindness. from that day until today, we became very good friends, a frienship I always cheerished. I will miss Chappy very much and will always remember his kindness to a young Black SF soldier during Scuba School in 1972. As a result of his kindness, encouragement and professionalism, I went on to complete a 31 year Special Forces career with 14 of those years on a Scuba Team with numerous years as a Scuba team sergeant. Please except my deepest sympathies and forgiveness for not responding sooner. Unfortunately, I was out of town working until 16 Aug and did not find out about his death until the 18th of Aug.

To Bob's Family,

Please accept our sincere condolences. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We will have a votive candle lit and a Mass said at our church, Saint John the Apostle in Bob's memory. How fortunate I was to have known Bob as a young "LT" with SFOD A-232 (UWO)10th SFGA, Fort Devens back in the 70's. Seem to remember our entire Team becoming PADI qualified Instructors thanks to Bob's superb training. Such wonderful times we had together. Am blessed and honored to have known and learned from this great Special Forces Warrior. We will miss him dearly.

Tae Kwon Do lost its most colorful person when Bob Chaplin died. From training sessions to nationals, he was always there to cheer us on, and he worked tirelessly to promote the sport and its competitors. Whether he was snapping pictures with his camera, giving a quick pep talk before we went in the ring, or taking us all out to dinner after a tournament, he always did his best to make us all feel like one big family. We’ll miss you, Bob!

Dear Bob:

Betty and I were shocked to learn of your passing. It will never seem real to us. During our gatherings with you, Lili, Christian, and your mother Marion, we were becoming acquainted with your outstanding qualilties: kindness, generosity, good humor, good conversationalist, knowledge of an infinity of subjects including physics (which I taught in high school). Betty and I will greatly miss your friendship. It was too soon for you to leave us.

We were looking to many more years of being with you. Thanks for all of the E-mail jokes and stories you sent me. I printed out many of them, and when I read or tell them, I'll remember you.

I was blessed to have known and love my dearest friend, brother and comrade for over three decades. We served together in Vietnam and Bobby provided medical assistance to me when I was injured. We have maintained communication on a regular basis through the internet and telephone over these many years. And we have attended many functions together in the past. I will miss him dearly and look foward when we shall be back together again, along with many of our Special Forces brothers and comrades. God Bless Bobby Chaplin.

Dear family members and friends: I knew Bob since 1974. I first met him in Key West, FL where he was one of my instructors at the Special Forces SCUBA School. About a year later he was one of my instructors at the Special Forces Medical Lab at Ft Bragg, NC. Two or three years after that we worked together in the SF Medical Dispensary at Bad Tolz, Germany. We ran into each other several times, in various places over the years and always shared good memories and friendship. Our last meeting was at the 50th Special Forces Reunion at Ft Bragg. We had the opportunity to tour the new (for us)SF Medical Lab together. I made it a point to have our photograph taken together there--student and instructor from many years ago. Bob was a good friend and will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathies go to you all.

The Chaplin Family...Bob touched so many of us, his friends in so many, many ways. His smile not only lightened up our world, but the smile from his heart made it all the more meaningful. He will be missed by so many, but the memories we have of him will forever be in our hearts. He is now with peace, and all the other friends that have gone before him and I know that each one of us will carry on the "Bob" stories for a long, long time. My thoughts are with each of you. Jim Ringland

August 5, 2003

Hi Bob, it's me again. It has been a long long time, and due to a quirk of fate that happened this evening, I found some highlights left out of my original eulogy.

A while back, you like "Bear" Bryant, contacted me and asked "are you the same Jim Ringland that ##$@$#$$#@#," and when I responed to the affirmative we proceeded to "catch up." Bear and I still do, and you will be receiving email thoughts every now and again as I think of some sage thoughts.

We once shared meals, drinks, and comradship in the field, clubs, and in teamwork. I sat down and figured out something else. You was born 3 years after my wife, Joan, whom you knew, and also in Schenectady. Then other memories arose, and I racked my brain in thought. Space here is not long enough to elaborate.

Get with Maggie and the rest of the tribe, and have one waiting for the rest of us when we check in.

As for your survivors, especially Christian, who needs a lot of love and understanding, Live Large, and be Proud, you father wouldn't expect anything differently from you. Your father was a Proud, Brave, and True Friend to all that he served with. Some of the older lads went to school with my oldest son, who is another retired SF operator. We are family and the Special Forces Community stick together.

You used to receive my default parting on each email, and sincerely I would like to leave you with it here,

Take care, stay safe, keep smiling, happy hunting, and may the Good Lord keep a watchful eye over you and yours...........Ringo

Then I heard the Lord saying:

"Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" and I said, "Here am I, send me!". Isaiah 6:8

Many people across the country (and the world) were shocked and saddened by the death of Bob Chaplin.

Ohio Athletes and Parents have lost a great TKD supporter, photographer, coach, and friend.

We have lost Ohio's (and perhaps the country's) best Taekwondo photographer. Bob had a certain timing and sense of the game which allowed him to snap his shots at just the right time.

I've known Bob and Christian since 1998. We met at local, state, and national tournaments, championships, and seminars. We kept in touch via email & IM's.

Christian, please know that time heals. You will never "get over it", it will not "get better". It will, after time, get not so bad.

If you need anything, please let us know.

We want to see you back in Taekwondo Competition.
