Tong Choi Obituary

Tong Choi

MUNROE FALLS -- Tong Choo Choi, an amazing husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and businessman, passed away on Monday, November 14th, 2016.

As a pioneer for the Choi family, he immigrated to the United States in 1969 and truly lived the American dream. Over the years, he helped to bring his entire family from South Korea, including his parents, three brothers, three sisters, and their families. Upon arriving in the U.S. and starting with only the change in his pocket and his two bare hands, he built several successful businesses including the Champion Webbing Company in Cuyahoga Falls.

Mr. Choi's true passion was his family. He married his wife, Patricia J. Choi in 1971. They had three children, Eugene, Jennie, and Patricia. More recently, Mr. Choi loved and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Ashley, Jackson, and Ella. Mr. Choi's family also extended to his students at his martial arts school, the T.C. Choi Tae Kwon Do Institute. As Grand Master, he founded the school in 1970 and it is one of the longest running martial arts schools in the country. Here, he was a teacher and mentor to thousands of students who found inspiration in his instruction, values and dedication. He had high standards in how he lived his life and how he taught his students. Mr. Choi leaves a legacy as a successful businessman, incredible family-man, and teacher.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patricia J. Choi; his children, Eugene (Alissa) Choi, Jennie (Todd Nelson) Choi, and Patricia (Jeff Toenies) Choi; his grandchildren, Ashley, Jackson, and Ella; and many extended family members and friends.

Friends are invited to Redmon Funeral Home for visitation Friday, November 18, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m., where funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m.. Burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute. (REDMON, STOW 330-688-6631)

My condolences to his family. Mr. Choi taught me taekwondo in the late 80s, to which I earned a black belt under his guidance. He was one of the best teachers I have ever had, and I still draw upon his wisdom, strength, and knowledge. He was one of the greats, and will be sorely missed.
