Alfred Ledger Obituary

Dec. 24, 1918 - Nov. 19, 2011 EDMOND It is with sadness, mixed with Christ's great comfort, that I let you know of Sergeant Major Alfred Walter Ledger's passing. He passed Saturday morning at 08:20 a.m., peacefully in his sleep. He succumbed to cancer and pneumonia at 93. "ALFIE," as he was known by family and friends, and "BUD" from his earlier years growing up in Norristown, Pennsylvania, was a very good athlete, with baseball his favorite, and was comparable to the present day Eagle Scout in the 1920s. After graduation from high school, he went to work at the local steel mill. He enlisted in the Army after Pearl Harbor and went to Ft. Lee, VA for Basic Training. He was involved in combat throughout WW 2 as a Combat Engineer in the North African and Sicily campaigns and was in the 3rd wave at Omaha Beach during the "D-DAY" invasion of Normandy. He served with General Patton's units, relieving Bastogne in the "Battle of the Bulge," eventually serving on Gen. Patton's general staff. After the war was over, he was part of the rebuilding effort in Germany, eventually returning to the US to raise a family. He again served with the Combat Engineers during the Korean War. Later he was again stationed in Korea, but his duties also took him into Vietnam with the General Staff. After returning from Korea, he transferred into the Quartermaster Corps (supply) for the remainder of his career. Retiring after 30.5 years at Ft. Hood, TX, he then became Quartermaster for Allen Military Academy in Bryan, TX. After sending me to Texas A&M University, he moved to Mannford OK, where he enjoyed retirement and a love for animals. When his health began to fail, he moved to Edmond, OK and lived with son, Brian, a Veterinarian, and Brian's wife, Lisa, where he continued loving and caring for animals. He was preceded by his family and wife, Myrtle; as well as son, Alfred Jr.; daughter, Carolyn; and son, Darrell. Alfie is survived by daughter, Linda Halford, who is a veteran of the Vietnam War, and husband Gene Davison of Springfield, MO; sons, Brian of Edmond, OK and wife Lisa Rudolph; and Randy and wife Louise Pope Ledger. Alfie has six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Services are scheduled for 8 a.m., Friday, November 25, 2011, at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel, with interment to follow at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery.
