Anna Marie Barnett McBride

Anna Marie Barnett McBride died Wednesday, February 05, 2003, from leukemia. She was born April 15, 1928, in Pampa, TX. Anna, a valedictorian at Pampa High School, attended OU where she pledged Alpha Delta Pi. While at OU, she met her husband, Gifford McBride, who later graduated from Optometry School in Chicago. They were married 55 years. Her father and mother, Henry Fuller Barnett and 'Goldie' Myrtle Irene Lee Barnett, and brother, Fuller Leroy Barnett, preceded Anna in death. She is survived by her husband, Gifford; five children and their families: Dr. G. Mark McBride and wife, Ok Hwa; Janet Hicks of Tulsa and husband, Dr. David Hicks, their children Kaycie and Reese; Dr. Scott McBride and wife, DarIa, their children, Megan and Cale; Lisa Prince and husband, Jim Prince, their children Andrew and Anna; and Todd McBride. Anna is also survived by her cousin, Jean Burrell of Amarillo, Texas, and her husband, Glynn. Anna worked for many years as a legal secretary while her husband was in optometry school and during the early years of his practice. She also helped children with vision improvement therapy in her husband's office where she served as the business manager. Anna volunteered for many organizations including the Midwest City Verbena Garden Club, Midwest City Garden Council, and the Hospital Auxiliary. When Anna's children were young, she was the PTA president at Ridgecrest Elementary. She volunteered for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) both locally and nationally. She was a legislative advocate for NAMI and was active in the passing of insurance parity for mental illness and the Anna McBride Mental Health Court Bill. She was appointed by Gov. Keating to the Oklahoma Rehabilitation Advisory Board. She received the J.C. Penney Award, the Betts Holmes Award from the Mental Health Association and the Advocacy Award from CONTACT. She served three years as the president of the NAMI state organization and was the past president of the National Presidents of NAMI. She taught education classes for people who have mental illness in their families. She was also honored as one of the Oklahoma Hospitality Club's 'Ladies in the News.' She joined the First Christian Church of Midwest City in 1952 and sang in the choir for many years. She and her husband were members of Young Men's Club, Regency Ballroom Dance Club, Revelers Dance Club, Mayfair Dance Club and Community Music Association. Anna will be missed by her family and many friends.
