1924 - 2016

March 10, 1924 - September 10, 2016 RENO, NV Arthur Lloyd Henderson Sr. was born March 10, 1924, to Herbert and Ruth Henderson in Cleveland, OK. Arthur joined the United States Navy during World War II and was trained as a gunner in the Navy Air Force, where he served. His service to America was something he forever treasured. On Nov. 16, 1946, he married Precious Franklin, in Wichita, KS. After marriage, Arthur and Precious lived in Hobbs, NM for 20 years, where his four children were born. Arthur worked proudly in the United States Post Office, where he retired. Arthur and his family moved back to Oklahoma in 1964, where his children grew up in a loving family. In 2004, Arthur moved to Reno, NV and lived with his daughter, who cared for him until his last breath. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and loved God dearly and knew he would have eternal life. Arthur was known as a very kind and gentle person who made all he met feel comfortable and loved. He was a wonderful Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sept. 10, 2016, in Reno after several years of declining health. Survivors include daughter, Janet Henderson, of Reno, NV; two sons, Arthur L. Henderson II and wife Lisseth, of Reno, NV; and John "Kenny" Henderson of Olathe, KS; three brothers, Jack Henderson and wife Patricia, of Edmond, OK; Robert Henderson and wife Jeri, of Cleveland, OK; and David Henderson and wife Donna, of Edmond, OK; five sisters, Louise Mullennax, of Del City, OK; Alberta Norton, of Oklahoma City; Jean Smith, of Edmond, OK; Marsha Anson, of Fairfax, OK; and Linda Spitz and husband Jimmy, of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren, Tami Hunter, Josh Hunter and wife Jessica, Tawni Henderson, and Arthur L. "Artie" Henderson III; and four great-grandchildren, Ryan Hunter, Rebecca O'Dell, Alyssa Hunter, and Tyler Hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Sandra Darlene Hunter; two brothers, Wilbert Henderson and Wayne Henderson; and sister, Doris Webb. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, but his kindness, patience and wisdom will live in his children and grandchildren whom he so dearly loved. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and medical professionals at the VA Hospital and Renown Hospital in Reno, NV who cared for him during his illness. The family especially would like to recognize the special care and comfort Arthur received from Linda Ash Jackson, MD, Henrik Slots, MD and Marie M. McCormack, MD. Visitation will be held at Walton's Funeral Home, 875 West 2nd Street in Reno, NV between 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016. Visitation will be held at Matthews Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday Sept. 15, 2016. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16 at the New Covenant United Methodist Church, 2700 S. Boulevard, Edmond, OK 73013. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond, where Arthur will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife of 70 years. Services are under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly, Edmond, OK 73003.
