Barbara Craig Obituary

Longtime Guymon resident, Barbara Joan Craig passed away at her residence in Dallas, Texas, March 16, 2007. Barbara was born in Guymon, Oklahoma on December 7, 1922 to Paul and Ruth Smith. She was a 1940 graduate of Guymon High School and went on to earn her degree at Panhandle A&M College in business with a minor in home economics. In 1941 Barbara met Virgil Craig and married on August 23, 1942. While Virgil served in the Army Air Corps., Barbara taught business, shorthand, typing, and bookkeeping at Beaver High School in Beaver, Oklahoma. After his return, the couple farmed 18 miles northwest of Guymon, Oklahoma. Barbara was a long- time member of the Victory Memorial United Methodist Church of Guymon where she served as president of the UMW. She was a Charter Member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Guymon, and a member of the Mothers and Daughters Home Demonstration Club as well as the Martha Ruth Circle. She served on the Board for Mobile Meals and Dunaway Manor for several years while living in Guymon. After her move to Dallas in 1995, Barbara attended Schreiber Memorial United Methodist Church where she later became a member. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Craig; along with her parents, Paul and Ruth Smith; her brother, Burton Smith; and her sister, Phyllis Thayer. Barbara is survived by her four children: Neil Craig, Carol Craig Potter, Hal Craig, Chad Craig. Barbara had six grandchildren and six nieces and nephews including Clark Thayer of Guymon, and one great-granddaughter. She was blessed with her special caregiver and friend, Pamela Hutto, of Dallas during the final years of her life. Pam greatly enhanced Barbara's life and will always be regarded as one of the family. Visitation will be Friday March 23, 2007 at Henson-Novak Funeral Home 501 N.W. 5th Street Guymon, Oklahoma from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Interment will be in Guymon Memorial Cemetery with a private ceremony for the family followed by a Memorial Service and celebration of her life at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 24, 2007 at the Victory Memorial United Methodist Church in Guymon, Oklahoma. The Family has requested in lieu of flowers donations be made to Victory Memorial United Methodist Church or to the Virgil Craig Scholarship Fund.
