Ellen Verity Obituary

Ellen Louise Verity was born in Veedersburg, IN. on October 3, 1916. She was the daughter of George and Essie VanHoesen. She attended Perdue University and the University of Oklahoma where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. While at the University of Oklahoma she met the love of her life, Geo. L. Verity and they were wed on March 17, 1937. She moved to Wichita Falls, TX with George and waited for him patiently during WWII after he was taken prisoner by the Japanese when Bataan fell. While many did not know whether he was alive or dead she always had faith in his return. Her faith was justified when George did return and they began their family after the war. George and Ellen lived in Oklahoma City, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Farmington, New Mexico during their marriage. They were active members of St. Luke's Methodist and All Souls Episcopal Churches. Their union produced four sons, Jidge, Steve, David and Mark. George and Ellen were married for almost 59 years when George left on September 3, 1996. Ellen joined the love of her life on July 31, 2005. Ellen loved her second home in Jackson, Wyoming where she and George had a magnificent retirement. Ellen loved playing bridge, working her daily crossword puzzles, and rooting for her Sooners in the fall. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her sister Betty, and her brother Web. She is survived by her children Jidge and Chris Verity, Steve Verity, David Verity, and Mark Verity. Her grandchildren Heather and Tom Showalter, Alison and Ryan Turner, Matt Verity, Patrick Verity, Megan Verity, and Michelle Verity and great granddaughter Mary Ellen Showalter also survive her. Her sister Georgiana Carter of Carmel, IN., and nephews Bob and Bruce Holmes of Oklahoma City, and many other nephews and nieces from out of state also survive her. We will all miss her. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Chapel.

We offer our deepest sympathy to Jidge and the Verity family in the loss of their dear mother. Although we did not know her, we gather from her obituary that she was a woman of many interests, a good wife and mother. Society definitely benefitted from the way she raised her family and through the way she lived her life. Chuck and Sonya Gill

To the Verity family, I send my deepest sympathies over the death of your dear mother. From reading her obituary, she had a long and interesting life, one most of us wish we could have. I was struck by her wide variety of interests and especially her devotion to family. I know only one of them: her son, Jidge. Mrs. Verity's efforts to teach good values that translate to worthwhile contributions to society are most evident in Jidge's life and in those who know him. Thus, I feel blessed by Mrs. Verity's influence even though I never met her. My prayers are with the family as they grieve the loss of this good woman whose memory will continue to bring joy and comfort to them for all their days. Sincerely, Bob Roush, Houston, Texas
