ELVIRETTA WALKER DEWANLongtime Oklahoma City journalist Elviretta Walker Dewan has died in Cincinnati, Ohio. She had lived there following marriage to James T. Dewan July 29, 1978 at St. Joseph's Cathedral, Okla. City. She died Jan. 9, 2007. Services were conducted January 12, 2007, by nephew, Rev. Kenneth Lane, Mexia, Texas, at the Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Community Chapel, Cincinnati. Mrs. Dewan was born March 27, 1917, in Edmond, Oklahoma to John and Flolo Belle Walker. She was graduated from Central High School in 1937. She was employed by the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C., served as a court reporter at the WWII war crimes trials, Nuremberg, Germany, joined the U.S. State Department and was stationed in Korea when war broke out in 1950. She was evacuated from Seoul when the North Koreans captured the city. After returning to Oklahoma, she earned a degree in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma. She was a reporter and editor for The Daily Oklahoman and Women's Editor for the Oklahoma Journal. Known for fashion page design, she covered the New York fashion scene, was a photographer and wrote poetry, fairy tales and personalized crossword puzzles for children of friends and relatives. Grandparents, photographer, Augusta Wade and Etta Belle Hampton arrived in Oklahoma County in the 1889 Oklahoma Territory Land Run via covered wagon. On the 100th anniversary of that event, Ms. Dewan joined friends to travel in a covered wagon train from Kansas to Guthrie. Her husband, whom she first met in Germany when he was an attorney at the WWII trials, died in 1996. Also deceased are her parents three brothers, Carlton Hampton, Xenophon, Apollo Belvedere and sisters, Tansey Flo Havens and Amneris Harmison. Survivors include brother, Deloraine Walker and wife June, Kansas City, Missouri their daughter, Cindy and son-in-law Rev. Kenneth Lane and children, Tiffany Madison, Katy Beth, Spencer and Austin, Mexia, Texas their son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Julie Hampton Walker and sons, Devon Emanuel, Sean Hampton, and Ian Isaiah. Also nephews and wives, Don and Barbara Walker, Ft. Collins, CO David and SusanWalker, Austin, TX Marvin Roy and Christine Havens, and daughter Georgia, Hawaii. Also stepson, James Dewan, Jr. and wife Peggy, their daughters Anna and Eve, Cincinnati, Ohio stepdaughter, Mary Margaret Smith and husband Jack Smith. Woodland Hills, CA brother-in-law, Carroll Harmison, Silver Springs, MD and children, Jack and Kathryn Elizabeth.
