FREDERIC MEYERS Obituary

May 6, 1932 - Jan 31, 2015 ENID The Graveside Service for Fredric D. Meyers will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2015, in the family cemetery, three miles north of Hwy 64 on Hwy 58, across from the Lutheran Cemetery of Lahoma. Preceding the service, a Visitation will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home, Enid, OK. Fredric was born May 6, 1932, in Enid to Emanuel J. and Margaret (Gensman) Meyers and died Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Golden Oaks Nursing Home. His maternal grandparents were Fred Charles and Gustie Gensman, pioneers and owners of Gensman Hardware. Fred cherished his Gensman heritage. Fred attended Taft Grade School, Emerson Jr. High and Enid High School, where he lettered in football, basketball, track and baseball. He was named to the All-State Football team and was President of the Enid High School Class of 1950. After graduation, he was offered football scholarships from Coach Bud Wilkinson, The University of Oklahoma; and Coach Red Blake, of West Point Military Academy. He elected to attend West Point. As a freshman, he was the team's quarterback and also lettered in basketball and baseball. For his junior year, he transferred to Oklahoma A&M College to play football. A broken leg shortened his career at A&M. He finished his college studies at Michigan State University and UCLA. After college, he played for the Edmonton Eskimo professional football team. Later, while in the Army, he played for the Fort Sill, OK football team. The team was mostly college and professional players who were serving their military obligation. He started as their 6th team quarterback and quickly moved up to starting quarterback. Fred pursued his artistic talents in Hollywood, CA. After moving to California, he was active in TV and movie filming. One of his assignments was the production of the Bob Hope Golf Classic. He treasured a picture of him and Bob Hope making plans for the tournament. In the 1990s, when his parents were ill of health, he moved back to Enid. His family was very active in the First Presbyterian Church. Fred had a strong Christian faith and love for his church. He is survived by his cousin, Ginger Jefferies and her siblings in Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marjorie; and aunt, Mildred. Fred's cousins would like to give a special thanks to Jim Hurd, who cared for him with such respect and dignity over the past years. In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be given through the Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home to Loaves and Fishes. Condolences may be made at www.enidwecare.com

I am a cousin of Freddy....I was young when we would through throw the football in Hawaiian Gardens. My Parents are Paul Emanuel Miller and mom Beatrice Arizona (Dawson) Miller. He used to ask us as kids to go golfing with him. always wanted to go but we were lil kids. I have good memories of Freddy. im sorry we lost contact. Would have enjoyed seeing him ...my wife and I have lived in Oklahoma since 1983 and never knew Freddy was here. we frequent Enid some ....makes me think we saw one another at some point. Us kids always had good times around him. may his memory soon bring you peace and a smile when we all remember the good times shared. Mr.Gary Bradford Miller

I am a relative of Frederick through my grandfather Karl Charles and then by my mother Verna June Meyers (Switzer). I remember hearing about Frederick when I was a small child, but not much else...I think he might have given me a Kimono from China (which I still have), but I am not exactly sure if it was him or not..I am very sorry for your loss...I'm sure he was loved by God.
