FREDERICK BLACK Obituary

June 27, 1951 - May 7, 2013 OKLAHOMA CITY Frederick Michael Black, affectionately known to many as "Rickey", passed away in Palo Alto, CA surrounded by his family on May 7, 2013 at age 61. He was born on June 27, 1951 in New York City, the son of Melitta and Dr. Jack Black. In 1969 he graduated from Horace Mann School in Riverdale, NY and continued his education at Oberlin College graduating with a BA in Geology in 1973. There he met his wife, Robin. He went on to pursue an MS in Geology from University of Wisconsin in 1977. Hired by Gulf Oil, Rickey moved to Oklahoma with Robin several months after they were married in 1977. Later, he worked for Slawson Oil and eventually started his own company, B&W Exploration, in 1988 with partner Kirk Whitman. Rickey was admired by his peers for his passionate love of geology and the integrity of his work.Rickey made an impact on his community by serving as a board member and treasurer of Temple B'nai Israel and board member and treasurer of Jewish Federation of Oklahoma City. He also generously fostered the succeeding generations of the Oberlin College community by contributing to the rebuilding of the geology department and funding field camp scholarships. He also had a long history of philanthropy, supporting Oklahoma City Ballet, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.Skiing, sailing, travel, poetry, art, music, and the ocean were among his many interests, but his greatest passion was for his family and friends. He loved the outdoors and spent much of his time exploring the beauty of New Mexico, his home away from home. Rickey made all of his family and friends feel listened to and loved. He was nurturing, accepting, wise, caring, and full of life. He always lit up the room with love and laughter. His strong and generous spirit was with him until the very end.He is survived by his wife of 35 years Robin S. Black and three children Hillary, Evan, and Lily Black. He is also survived by his brother Dr. Robert Black of Hamden, CT. A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Friday, May 10, 2013, at Temple B'nai Israel. Donations can be made to the Rick Black Memorial Fund for medical research at Bank First of Oklahoma, Attn: Ed Alexander. His life rose in the east and set in the west, but he shared the world with us from the middle of the country, his geological outpost of Oklahoma City.

Rick was a business acquaintance of mine. We worked in the same industry & in the same building at 100 Park Ave. for many years. We would pass in the halls, ride the elevators, and see each other from time to time around OKC. I visited some with the girls who worked for him. They told me he was wonderful to work for. To me, he was always smiling and always had a funny comment or glance that lifted my spirits every time we met. I am so sad that such a bright light has been taken away from the world, way, way too soon. I will never forget his kindness, humor, smile & that twinkle in his eyes. I am so very sorry for your/our loss. My thoughts & prayers will be with you in days & years to come. May God bless and keep you.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Robin, Hilary, Evan and Lily as well as to Gari Silverblatt, Rickey's beloved mother-in-law, and to all in the Black family. May Rickey rest in peace, and may his family be consoled knowing that he contributed so much to so many during his lifetime.

My sympathies to an extraordinary family. Rick was such a great influence & mentor for my son who wanted to be a geologist and helped him immensely in his pursuit of that profession. On a personal note, Rick, Robin, Evan, Hilary & Lily have been a super second family. We love you.

My condolences to Rick's family and friends. Like everyone else who knew him, I consider Rick to be one of the finest men I have ever known. Although I did not have the opportunity to get to know him well, he was always positive, kind, thoughtful, and helpful to me. I will cherish his memory for the rest of my life.

I considered Rick as a second son. I worked for one of his companies for about 17 years. He was just such a sweetheart to me and was was so supportive when my husband was dianosed with Alzheimer's. Our community has lost a special light. I extend my sincere sympathy to Robin and their children Patsy I. Rieger

My heart-felt condolences to Rick's family and friends. I know that the loss of such a wonderful and kind person must be terribly difficult. Ricky, as he was known when we went to school in New York, was a truly special person. His smile was ever-present and he was utterly genuine. I will always remember him fondly.

My condolences to Rick's family. We were classmates in high school. I remember him as one of the most positive, good-natured, and cheerful kids at school. I had a chance to visit with him a few years ago at our reunion, and he was the same guy. So sorry for your loss.

Sorrow has instantly spread among Rick's high school classmates. Many remembrances have been shared this morning on our extensive class mailing list. Everyone remembers Ricky for his extraordinary good cheer, warmth and broad ever present smile. Many of us have expressed how glad we were to see Rick and to meet Robin at our 40th class reunion in 2009. Most of us have known him since we were 11 or 12 years old -- some even longer, from elementary school. To know him was to know how exceptional his good nature was. Fond regards to Robin and Rick's family.

While thinking of Rick I remember how much he enjoyed the comradeship and high drama of our breakfast meetings back in the Slawson days. See you again someday.

Rick was always a delight, whether it be a business venture, or watching our kids together at some school function. I will miss his cheerful nature and sense of humor, but I was honored to have known him.
