Grant was vice president of Artists and Repertoire for Sparrow Label Group. He suffered a severe head injury July 3rd while playing soccer in Franklin, TN. He underwent emergency surgery and treatment at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville. He died peacefully Sunday afternoon, July 7th. In a letter to his staff, Peter York, president of Sparrow Label Group, celebrated the life of a close friend and colleague. 'Grant was an extraordinary human being who, at the young age of 37, has left a legacy that has touched many lives. His gifts and talents have made an immeasurable contribution to our artists and their music. Over the past 8 years, Grant has served as friend and mentor to the staff and artists of Sparrow Label Group. He was first hired as project manager, A&R for Sparrow Records in October of 1994 and most recently served as vice president, A&R. He was responsible for the creative direction and development of Avalon, a genuine artist development success story, taking them from new artist to gold-selling status in only 3 years. He also signed Michelle Tumes and pop group Jump5 and chaired the A&R committee for the WOW brand. He was currently working on new projects from Jump5, Chris Tomlin and Avalon members Jody McBrayer and Janna Long, as well as several multi-artist and concept projects. Grant was also a prolific songwriter for EMI Christian Music Publishing. He wrote or co- wrote numerous # 1 songs for Point of Grace, Avalon, Cindy Morgan, Steve Green, Jonathan Pierce, Amy Grant, The Martins, Sandy Patti and Kathy Trocolli. Notable writing credits include 'Blue Skies,' recorded by Point of Grace and 'Always Have, Always Will,' recorded by Avalon. Grant won a Dove Award for Pop Song of the Year for 'The Great Divide' in 1996, recorded by Point of Grace, a 1995 Emmy Award for an Original Composition for NBC. In 1999 he was ranked # 2 among Christian songwriters by American Songwriter Magazine. He was a member of the faculty for both the GMA Academy of Gospel Music Arts and the Christian Artist's Seminar. He also created a songwriting curriculum for GMA. Prior to joining Sparrow, Grant sang on commercials for Coke, Frito Lay, Post Cereals, Chevrolet, Logo Athletic and Visa. A graduate of Putnam City North HS and Baylor University, Grant moved from Oklahoma City to Nashville in 1989. He married Kristin Johnsen in 1990 and they had 3 children. They resided in Franklin, TN and attended Christ Community Church, where Grant served as an elder. Grant is survived by his wife, Kristin, and three sons, Will and Evan (5 yrs.) and Blake (1 ½ yrs), his parents, Paul and Freda Cunningham of Oklahoma City, 2 sisters, Carmen Choate and her husband, Kent, of Oklahoma City, Nancy Royall and her husband, Bob, of Plano, TX, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. His song Holy are you Lord has been an immense blessing to me since I first heard it play in the mid 2000's.. I still listen to the songs today and it blesses me so much. Rest in Peace Grant.

Grant Cunningham - Blue Skies (Live in Nashville, 2002)

"In 2002, I attended a songwriters showcase event where many of the top Gospel Music songwriters in Nashville were scheduled to perform the songs they had written.... writers like Steven Curtis Chapman, Geoff Moore, Peter Furler, Lenny LeBlanc, Paul Baloche, Bart Millard of MercyMe and among them was a guy I was not familiar with by name: Grant Cunningham. Grant Cunningham was a singer/songwriter best remembered for his collaborations with the group "Point of Grace". In 2002, he was nominated for a Dove Award for a song he co-wrote with Matt Huesmann, entitled "Blue Skies". I remember sitting near the back row of this large hotel conference room when Grant took the stage. There was something about the sincerity of his performance that made me take notice and even though I didn't know who he was, I snapped a picture of him singing his song... a picture I still have to this day. We never met and that was the last time I ever saw him. I went back to New Jersey and later, I found out that 2 months after this performance, Grant died as the result of injuries he sustained during an adult league soccer game. I was heartbroken to hear of his passing. The more I read about him online, I learned just how important he had been to the Contemporary Christian Music Industry in the 90's and early 2000's, working with everyone from Chris Tomlin to Amy Grant. He was the VP of A&R for Sparrow Label Group. As it turns out, the performance that I had attended was filmed and the tape was played at his funeral. Several years back, I found the video of that performance online and the other day, while searching an old hard drive, I rediscovered it. So, I am posting it here as a tribute to a man that I never met and only saw once briefly 13 years ago."

Hey Dad, it's Blake
It's been almost 15 years since you graced this world with your music, laughter, and presence. 15 years I haven't seen you. The sun has set 5,475 times and there isn't a day that goes by where I don't think of you. Just wanted to get this off my chest because I'm missing you a lot right now.
I love you and I miss you bunches,
Blakers

My son, Grant, loved music all his life. As a 4th grader, he played and sang the lead in "The Boy Who Caught the Fish," a musical about Jesus feeding the five thousand. I have the tape of his singing the title song. At the time of his death, he was A&R Director at Sparrow Records.

I remember Grant as a talented, friendly young man at Baylor. It has been fun to see his name on so many of my favorite CDs. When I learned of his death, I truly was comforted to know that he was in the presence of the glory of God now. I am praying for his wife and children who must miss him so very much.

Grant Cunningham was an amazing influence on the younger kids in the Putnam City Baptist Church youth ministry. I was always stunned by his unfailing faith.

I'm writing to tell the family how influencial he was in my daughters acceptance of Christ into her heart. I just read in the obituary that he wrote the words to 'The Great Divide' that is sung by Point of Grace. That song led her to talk about the 'Bridge to cross the great divide'. What a great message - and entrance to talk about the love of Christ.

Thank you Grant

I was sorry to hear of Grant's untimely death. I went to school in Oklahoma City with Grant. I remember Grant as a freckled-faced, red-headed, sweet boy. I am a teacher and there is this child that fits Grant's discription; I ALWAYS call him Grant, and of course, that is not his name. I guess I have thought of Grant many times in the past years. God bless his family. He will be missed. My 7 year old daughter favorite band is Jump 5. He will be missed. Stacy Greenwood Monteith

When Torie called and told me I was deeply saddened first by the family's loss second from my loss, by losing contact w/ him. He has done in his short life more than I will do in mine. He will sorely missed in the music industry. Paul, Freeda, Nancy and Carmon we can't be sad for him as he is with his Lord and Savior, it is his family who will suffer. We love you Grant and we will be keeping all of you in our prayers. Lori Spencer-Booth

I will always remember Grant and the freckle faced little red headed kid who lived around the corner. He played with my brother, Scott. I think it was Grant who invited my brother to Falls Creek the year my brother made a profession of faith. For that I am forever grateful. My prayers are with all of the family he has left behind.

I was in shock to learn of Grant's passing. I have so many fond memories of Grant as a youth at Putnam City Baptist Church. He was always willing to cart kids to and from youth events and had such good advice to share with the younger teens. May our memories of Grant live on.

Having grown up without brothers or sisters, I was always enjoyed my time at the Cunningham's growing up. I remember so many evenings as kids playing tricks and games back and forth with Grant. He was always the "kid brother" I did not have. I feel so fortunate to have been able to know Grant and my thoughts, prayers and much love are with each of the family right now -

I grew up with Grant and am stunned to hear of his passing. My heartfelt sympathy and love go out to all of the family. Grant was a fine young man when I knew him and the world was a better place for him being here.

I graduated from PC North with Grant in 1983. We were also in Chorus together during all our years in high school. He was truly unwaivering in his faith, and I cannot think of anyone who was more genuine and kind. Although I haven't seen him since high school, I have fond memories of him. I was not raised in church and he was one of those "PCBC Kids" who made a real impact on me. I am now the pastors secretary at NEWCHURCH in Oklahoma City. We are praying for all of Grant's family and friends.

Our family belonged to Putnam City Baptist Church for 10 years. During that time I want to say how very much I appreciated Grant's precious Christian example to our two older girls, Julie and Amanda. He made a lasting impression on their lives and the lives of so many.
