GUY FULLER Obituary

May 28, 1926 - January 6, 2013 OKLAHOMA CITY Dr. Guy Wesley Fuller, M.D. died Sunday, January 6, after a lengthy illness. A devoted husband and father, Guy was born to Joseph Guy and Irma Fuller in Ardmore, OK on May 28, 1926. Shortly thereafter, his father took a job with the Oklahoma Publishing Co. as a typesetter and moved the family to OKC's Putnam Heights area. Upon graduation from Classen High in 1944, Guy drove an M5A1 Light Tank ("Stuart" Tank), in the 67th Regiment of Gen. Patton's 2nd Armored Div. (Nicknamed- "Hell on Wheels"). After containing the German's Ardennes offensive ("The Battle of the Bulge"), Guy continued to serve in the peacetime reconstruction effort until 1947. From 1947-`51 Guy attended OCU and was a member of Phi Chi Phi Fraternity. On Sept. 1, 1950 Guy married Rita Ruth St. Clair. Guy and Rita's family grew with four boys over the next few years: John, Falon, Bennett and Richard. From `51-`55 Guy attended OU College of Medicine. After pursuing a Gen. Family Practice, Guy was later accepted as a Resident in the Department of Gynecology & Obstetrics at University Hospital. Between his residency and later private practice (at Baptist, Deaconess and then the new Mercy Hospitals), Guy delivered an estimated 7,000 babies, over his medical career that spanned some 40 years. While in practice Guy continued to teach medical students periodically at the OU Medical School and also served on dozens of medical boards and commissions and was a devoted member of The Osler Society. Upon his retirement from practice in the mid `90's, Guy served Mercy Health Center on Utilization Review, and was later a consultant for the Foundation for Medical Quality. While raising his boys in the Crown Heights & Quail Creek neighborhoods, Guy was a devoted Scouter. As an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troops 63 & 168, he attended numerous camping outings including Troop 168's contingent to the `73 National Jamboree in Idaho. While in scouts, Guy was exposed to a particular type of camping that turned into a lifelong passion - organizing & leading week-long float trips down dozens of Ozark streams in Arkansas & Missouri. With beloved co-leader, Tom Humphreys Sr., Guy introduced the sport of stream canoe-camping to hundreds of co-workers and friends that continues with 2nd and 3rd generations of "canoeists" today. Among numerous awards & recognitions for his distinguished service to medicine, one of Guy's proudest moments was being bestowed an Honorary Membership into his sons' Beta Theta Pi Fraternity at the University of Oklahoma in 1984. Guy was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Rita and his parents. He is survived by sons: John and wife Kim of OKC, Falon and wife Jamie of Edmond, Bennett and wife Lori of OKC, Richard and wife Lois of Jones; brother: John P. Fuller and wife Jarrel of Oxnard, CA; nine grandchildren, many nieces, nephews as well as "5th son" Dr. Jack E. Marshall and countless other friends in the medical community. I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Fuller. He was a wonderful father, physician, and my friend. He was our medical director in the Mercy Utilization Department in the 90's. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to work and become friends with such a honorable man. I remember going to Red Earth Exhibit with him and his grandchildren, Ramsey, Barrett, and wife Rita. I still have the dream catcher that he bought me. On Valentines Day, he would bring all the girls a long stem red rose in a vase. I have such great memories of this special man and his family. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Peace be with you.

Dr. Fuller was a dedicated man, to his profession, his family and his friends. If you had the priveledge of knowing Dr. Fuller then you were his friend. Dr. Fuller joyfully delivered my two beautiful daughters, held my hand during the recoveryof a D and C (to the amazement of the nurses. Afteralll what doctor does that?) and cried when we lost our son during our second trimester. At exams, as he definitely had a captive audience, he would tell silly jokes. However this time was most often filled with tales of his prized possessions, his children and grandchildren. He took his oath as a doctor seriously, especially the part regarding compassion. Guy Fuller was a gentle giant. Guy and Rita made everyone a part of the family. He was a wonderful doctor and a great friend. I will miss knowing he is no longer with us but happy for his joyous reunion with Rita, knowing he is telling jokes and stories to all that will hear.

Dr. Fuller was my doctor for many years and took care of me through 3 pregnancies. He was so nice and easy to talk to and a good doctor. I still pass on some of his advice to younger friends having children. Rest in peace, Dr. Fuller. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

Dr Fuller was one of the kindest men I have ever known. He was my Doctor for many years, and delivered my son. The weekend I was due, he wasn't going to be on call, so he told me someone else would be available to help me. Come to find out he and my Dad graduated from Classen the same year, and were both going to their reunion that weekend. The big joke at the reunion was hoping that I wouldn't go into labor and mess up there good time. He will be missed.
