JAMES DUNCAN Obituary

March 25, 1952 - June 25, 2014 NORMAN Dr. James Edward Duncan departed this life on June 25, 2014, in Norman, Oklahoma. He was born on March 25, 1952, in Washington, D.C., to Harold and Laverne Duncan. Dr. Duncan graduated from Putnam City High School ('70) in Oklahoma City. He received a Bachelor of Arts ('74) and Doctorate of Medicine ('78) from the University of Oklahoma. He was a Diplomate of American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Duncan opened his practice, Norman Neurology, in 1983. Dr. Duncan was an avid outdoorsman who loved hiking, camping, and adventure, especially in Big Bend National Park with his son. He also was an accomplished drummer who played rock, jazz and blues. Dr. Duncan is survived by his wife, Mary Freiburger; his son, Thomas Edward Duncan and wife Elena; his sisters, Jane Hill, Barbara Smith, Margaret Davis, Elizabeth Halverstadt, and Nancy Roche; numerous nieces and nephews; and his favorite dog, Doug. The family will hold a private memorial service. As Dr. Duncan was a protector and lover of animals, as well as a physician who believed everyone has a right to quality healthcare, the family asks, in lieu of flowers, that a donation be made in his honor to any of the following organizations: Wild Care (wildcareoklahoma.org), Bad Rap (badrap.org), or Doctors Without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.org). www.doctorswithoutborders.org

Dr. Duncan was my neurologist. I was a literature teacher at the time, and we had a roads not taken chat one day about his love of books and how he probably would have enjoyed being a teacher, too. He was a kind man, as well as a caring doctor who was known to go out of his way to help his patients

My deepest sympathies to Dr. Duncan's wife and son. I was one of his patients. He worked tirelessly to get my seizures under control and to be sure I didn't even have any auras. He will be hard to replace.

My son is a young adult with disabilities. His seizure disorder was challenging. Dr. Duncan made himself available to my son by supplying his caregivers with his office, home, cell, and pager numbers. He was quick to respond to any request and to offer practical solutions considering my son's diagnosis. I will remember him as a champion for those less able to care for themselves and a talented physician. He will be missed in the Norman community.

His passion drove my passion for stroke education. He was a fabulous mentor, great human being, and a fun guy to be around. I am going to miss you J.D., we all will!
