Jimmie Lawhon Obituary

Jimmie E. Lawhon of Oklahoma City joined our Father on Feb. 4, 2006. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Grace United Methodist Church, 6316 N Tulsa, directed by Guardian West Funeral Home, 5820 NW 41. Lawhon was born April 28, 1927, in Shawnee, OK, to John F. and Neva Jo (Boller) Lawhon. Upon completing his education in Oklahoma City, Lawhon joined the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the hospital ship U.S.S. Haven, APH 112. The ship's WWII duty was to retrieve U.S. prisoners of war from Nagasaki. He married Barbara J. Sutton, the love of his life, and as he so often said, his 'life line" in Fremont, Mich., in March 1945. He was employed by Great Plains Bottling Company, where on Sept. 11, 1980, he was involved in a tragic industrial accident, suffering numerous debilitating injuries. Through the years of constant pain, he never lost his will to live or his tremendous sense of humor. As a young man in Michigan, he was very involved in the youth groups of his church, Boy Scouts and volunteering. He was made a lifetime member of the Fremont, Mich., Fire and Police Department after many years of service. Lawhon was a long-standing member of Grace United Methodist Church, American Legion Capital Post 1000, Elks Lodge #417 and Fremont Lodge Order of the Moose #1555. A 50-year member of the Masons, Lawhon was a member of Siloam Lodge #276, also the Blue Lodge and a 32-year member of India Shrine Temple. He was involved in several Better Breathers groups, including those at Deaconess, Mercy and Pacers. Lawhon was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of the home; a son, Jimmie Jr. of Rockport, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Alicia and James Davenport of Moberly, Mo.; granddaughters Jamicia Wylie and her husband, Justin, of Edmond, and Amber Davenport of Oklahoma City; a great-granddaughter, Sydnie Bea Wylie of Edmond; a brother in Tulsa; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made in Lawhon's name to the Grace United Methodist Church Handicapped Parking Fund, 6316 N Tulsa Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73112. To contact the church, call (405) 943-9683. The funeral home number is (405) 495-9292.
