In an odd series of events, John Hole became my adviser when I was a first semester freshman majoring in journalism. Although he was a math professor, he was humble about his intellectual ability and was never condescending. He gently guided me through my scholastic decisions although they never included math classes. He took his role as adviser seriously. When I hadn't checked in with him in a while, he once walked across campus to where I worked in order to see how I was doing! After I transferred to another university, I ran into him and told him I was engaged to be married. Not long after we married and moved out of state, we were so surprised when he sent us a gift of china! He had taken the trouble to find out what our pattern was, and where we were living and sent it to us! I must have had at least six advisers during my years as an undergraduate and graduate student. I can't remember all of their names, but I'll never forget the first one!
