Prof Butzer was my teacher in physical geography at the University of Wisconsin. Although, I was a humanities student, it was my favorite class. He approached the class with great knowledge and humor. I'll never forget on a field trip we took to the Baraboo Hills, how he smiled at us students as we struggled to climb the steep hills. Memories like that are priceless. May God bless you.

We often feel at a time of mourning that we are distant from those we Love. But Carl is united with you now more than ever. No more will he know the restraints of the human condition. Death does not separate you from those you Love. It deepens your union with God and with Carl. A deeper Love, a Love that is enriched by God's own Love.
May God keep you and your Family in his Care.

Archaeology made great advances in recent decades due to the fieldwork and prolific writing of Prof. Karl Butzer. As his obituary indicates, he was a hard person to "classify" ....certainly, a world-class geographer and key founder of geoarchaeology...but he was also an archaeologist, historian, ethnohistorian,
historical archaeologist...and so many other areas of research. His contributions to Texas archaeology can be chronicled by his teaching at UT-Austin since 1984 and the large numbers of geoarchaeology and archaeology students who were influenced by him. He did extensive fieldwork in northeast Mexico dealing
with ecology and environmental change in several areas.
He was a colleague, a friend and an inspiration. It will be many years, if ever, before we see a scholar of this depth and this magnitude.

This was a great soul, mind, leader, and founder of fields of thought. Few people have accomplished this much or influenced this many people. I have read outpourings of praise, and grief, from around the world!
