Lawrence Robert "Larry" Lippel

Lawrence Lippel Obituary

Lawrence Robert 'Larry' Lippel, died Monday, May 20, 2002, in Edmond, Oklahoma. In excellent health otherwise, Larry's life was cut short by a fatal heart attack. Adored by his family and friends, Larry leaves a wonderful life to be remembered. Born December 8th, 1946, in Vinita, OK. Larry was the youngest of three children of Lewis and Dorris Lippel. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lewis Lippel. Larry is survived by his wife, Jacque, of the home in Edmond; three sons and their wives, Joe and Betsy Elliott of Houston, TX, Bill and Stephanie Elliot of Edmond, OK, and Grant and Erica Lippel of Lexington, OK; a daughter Stephanie and her fiance, Travis Edwards, of Tulsa, OK; and six grandchildren, Robert Elliott, Joseph Elliott, Annie Elliott, Justin Elliott, Brandon Elliott, and Ashton Lippel. He is also survived by his sister, Fredys Kime and her husband, Fred, of Garber, OK; his step- mother, Elsie Lippel, of Vinita, OK; and many other loving family members. He also leaves behind an uncountable quantity of 'family members' who are related to him because he cared and adopted them as his own. Larry graduated from Vinita High School in 1965. He received a BS in Mathematics from O.S.U. in 1969 and an MBA from O.C.U. in 1990. Larry had over 23 years of service with IBM. He started as a marketing representative in the early 70's and advanced to Global Sales Operations Executive. He held various jobs within IBM and was highly successful in every position. The same qualities that made Larry successful in his career contributed to every aspect of his life. He was willing to invest in others. He valued people. Business accomplishments may fade over time, but the benefits of Larrys listening, mentoring, and coaching will last forever. Larry and Jacque were married in 1976. Together, they created a life that warmed all who were fortunate enough to know them. Larry and Jacque loved their life. They continued to plan new adventures, exotic vacations, and places to ride on their Harleys. Larry was bigger than life, a loving husband, a dedicated and caring father, a deeply involved granddad, and the patriarch of his extended family. Larry believed in physical fitness. He was a dedicated jogger, an advanced snow skier, a skilled basketball player, and an avid golfer. He claimed to be a real threat in the annual Alvamar Golf Tournament. He was hard to beat in a game of hearts. At word games, he was a whiz. Larry experienced the rewards of a life well lived. He found joy in his ever growing circle of family and friends. We loved him so. He will live with us always. Reverend Charles Graves will conduct a memorial service at First Baptist Church of Edmond, 1300 SE 33rd, Edmond, OK on Friday, May 24, at 2:00 PM., with interment at Gracelawn Cemetery. Larry will always be in my memory. He was a kind, caring man and a true gentleman. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Larry. While it was short, he had an impact on my life. God Bless.

A person can tell a lot about a person in a round of golf. It only took a few holes to know that Larry was a class golfer and a class guy. I will miss seeing and playing with Larry at the annual Alvamar event.

The thing that always stayed with me about Larry was at one of our First Data picnics. Larry had a appointment and was still in his suit when he arrived. He had volunteered to be in the dunk tank and he just climbed up on the seat with his suit on and was an instant hit with everyone. It showed me that he always kept his word and would do anything for the employees at First Data.

Where do you start with a friend like Larry? Lots of stories come to mind. Larry, John Beahn and I went to graduate school together at OCU in the late 80’s. We had more fun than all the rest of the class put together.

The only time we got into a significant disagreement was when Larry and I worked together at First Data Management. I don’t remember what it was about but we were pretty upset with each other over some business issue. We left the room without resolving the issue. Larry came to my office within an hour and said “Ern, our friendship is so much more important than this.” He apologized and made sure that our friendship was not jeopardized by this argument. That was Larry……what a great friend.

I think about our good times on the golf course, the good times working together, the good times laughing together and the good times we would have had riding motorcycles if only God had given you more time here on earth.

To Jacque and all of Larry’s family, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Larry was my friend. He was there to share highs and lows that life dealt me. He celebrated the highs and gave encouragement during the lows.

Larry was there in the emergency room when our son Brian was brought in after a serious automobile accident that required 100+ stitches in his head. I'll never forget Larry at the hospital at 6:30 in the morning to express his concern and love. His presence and caring made you know he was your friend and if you were hurt, he was also hurt. He was with you; you were not alone if Larry was your friend.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Jacque and family at their great loss. Our prayers are with you.

For seventeen years I had the privilege of working and playing with Larry. Larry worked hard, played hard and was able to take both good fortune and adversity in stride. I know Larry had great affection for his family and friends because he was always talking about them and expressing that affection and love. He was a very poitive person who lived life to its fullest. He will certainly be missed, but will live on in our memories.

I met Larry at Alvamar and had the opportunity to play golf with him several times over the years. Always competitive but very enjoyable at the same time. I will miss seeing that big ol' guy with the great smile at this year's tournament. My deepest sympathies to Larry's family.

I knew Larry both as a fellow IBM'er and a customer. We played at Alvamar every year for at least 20 years but the best golf game I had with him was when he was a customer and we played in OK city. You cannot find a nicer person. He was a treasure.

Larry was one of my closest friends and one of the finest men I have known. At the reception following his funeral another man said, "You know I thought I had a really special relationship with Larry. I now find out that everyone here felt exactly the same. I guess just knowing Larry was special."

I knew Larry from the annual Alvamar golf tournament in Lawrence, KS held every August for the past 30 years. His friend Bill Adams first introduced Larry to the tournament and he has been a regular every since. I didn't know Larry well, but I admired and respected him greatly. He will be sorely missed as we gather again this August. My thoughts and prayers are with Larry's family.

I had the privilege of knowing Larry for 17 years, both through IBM and through the Alvamar golf tournament. What a terrific guy. Larry's warmth and sense of humor is something that always will be a part of anyone that knew him, and in that sense he continues to live on in all of us. My sincere condolences to his family.

I was blessed to play golf with Larry for 16 years at the Alvamar Golf Tournament. He was my favorite partner. My favorite Larry story is the one time when I was beating him straight up (the first time ever!). I made a long putt for a birdie on a par 3. He took the ball out of the hole and threw it into the lake. Looked at me and said "Dish, that's the last time that damn bll will ever see the light of day". I fell down laughing! That's the Larry Lippel, my friend, I will remember. I was so pleased that I was able to attend his funeral. Got to say goodbye personally. I will miss him.

I developed a wonderful friendship with Larry during 16 years of playing together in the Alvamar Golf Tournament. He was one of a kind. I don't think God has ever made a nicer person. We are all so blessed to have had him in our lives. He will live vividly in our memories.

I have known Larry from early in his career when we were both struggling Marketing Reps. He was always outgoing, friendly, and confident. You felt like you could always talk to him and he would spend time with you and give good advise. He will be missed by his business colleagues around IBM and especially here in Baton Rouge. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

I only had the opportunity to know Larry for a little more than sixteen months and yet he seemed like a life long friend. He was the guy you could turn to for support, insight, and most of all friendship. He left you with a smile on your face and a sense of well being in your heart everytime you were with him. Yes, he will be missed, but his memory will keep him alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. Larry was our friend.

Larry was a special person to work with. We all enjoyed his sense of humor, his wit, his personal dedication to his work...but most of all, his caring about people. He always ended his conversations with me..."now how are you doing?" Though our time working together was short, I will always remember Larry in my heart.

I have many fond memories of Larry, but my favorite is of him joining our Executive Team for a ski trip to Vail. Larry was hilarious, and we all laughed very hard for 4 incredible days. He was a dear friend and a mentor to me for many years. My deepest sympathy goes out to Jackie and his children.
