SHANNON SELF Obituary

Oct 17, 1956 - July 11, 2014 OKLAHOMA CITY Shannon T. Self, beloved husband, loving father, and dedicated businessman, passed away quietly, surrounded by friends and family, on the evening of Friday, July 11, 2014. Shannon was born October 17, 1956, in Thomas, Oklahoma, to Walterene and Ralph Self. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; a niece, Reagan Self; and a cousin, Brooke Self. Shannon is survived by his wife of 30 years, Tiffany Self; his three children, Taylor, Bailey, and Ian Self; his three younger siblings, Drew, Tarena, and Sid Self; and many nieces and nephews. Shannon is best described in terms of his numerous and incredible qualities. His intelligence, compassion, generosity, and faith affected all he came into contact with, and the lasting impression that he leaves will never be forgotten. Shannon was a man of great faith. He was a dedicated student of the Bible for many years as a member of Bible Study Fellowship as well as a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Moore and, more recently, Crossings Community Church. As a businessman, his many talents led him to assist his friends, Aubrey McClendon and Tom Ward, in taking the Chesapeake Energy Corporation public, where he served as primary attorney and an original member of the Board of Directors. He received his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Oklahoma in 1979 and his Juris Doctor from Northwestern University in Chicago in 1984. After graduating and finding success in his career, Shannon went on to sit on the boards of Westminster School in Oklahoma City, Heritage Hall in Oklahoma City, and the Board of Visitors at Northwestern University School of Law. While on these boards, he generously contributed his time and counsel to these institutions which shaped both him and his family's educational experiences. Services will be on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Crossings Community Church, 14600 N. Portland, interment to follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. Family visitation will be held Monday, July 14, 2014, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Hahn Cook/Street & Draper, 6600 Broadway Extension. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of two organizations Shannon loved and supported: Ukraine Ministries of Oklahoma, 1417 Old Mill Rd, Moore, OK 73160; or The Shannon Self Debate Team at the University of Oklahoma (OU Foundation, 100 Timberdell Rd, Norman, OK 73019).

Shannon Self, through his father, had some business dealings with my deceased mother, Gretchen Srigley. The amount was $6,000, a very small sum. Because the holding was outside my mother's trust, it took some time and effort to resolve. Shannon handled the transaction beautifully. He was not well during this period. While I never had the pleasure of meeting him personally, he has my complete admiration and respect. I knew his father. He would have been extremely proud of his son,

We will so miss Shannon. He was enormously kind, generous of spirit, brilliant, humble, fun and funny. We had such a wonderful time with you and Shannon at our last Law School reunion sitting next to the two of you at the dinner table. We wish you and your children and family our deepest condolences and support.
May his memory be a blessing and peace be upon him.

I was introduced to Shannon about 10 years ago and have sought his advice on occasion ever since. He was an amazing mentor and his guidance was always helpful; I am truly saddened to hear of his passing.

Shannon was a tremendously warm and compassionate person. I just can't believe I won't be able to see him in September at our reunion; he was one of the people I looked forward to seeing the most. Whenever I saw him again, it was as if we had just last met the day before. His presence will loom large at our reunion.

Tiffany, I wish you and your kids comfort at this difficult time. Comfort, most of all, from these remembrances and from the warm and glowing memories of Shannon that you each have. Through them, he can stay with you forever. I feel bad (and have felt bad for years) about not staying in touch with Shannon. That's my fault, and my loss. But despite that stumble on my part, I have my own warm and glowing memories of Shannon Self: his amazing friendship and warmth, and his amazing intellect. There could be no better friend, classmate, or gentleman. I feel blessed to have known him, and to have met you. Wishing you peace and comfort.

In law school, I was lucky enough to get Shannon as a partner in Negotiations. Some other teams were full of bluster and Shannon would disarm them by saying he was just a simple Okie. By the end of the negotiations they would be left scratching their heads as Shannon left with all his important goals accomplished. In between rounds Shannon often spoke of the love-of-his-life, his girlfriend, Tiffany. I was very saddened to hear that Shannon passed away but, in reading about his family and life, I was struck with the thought that, once again, Shannon left with all his important goals accomplished. Peace...

Two things stick with me from our law school days. He had a wicked sense of humor and was never too busy to help a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Tiffany and family, I am so sad to hear the news about Shannon. While we didn't keep in touch after law school, I have clear memories of how "big" a person he was--big in heart and big in presence--and how big his love and commitment were to you--I always admired that. I trust that your good memories of the years will carry you through to a peaceful place. In peace, Amy

Tiffany, it is with great sadness that we connect after 30 years under these circumstances. I remember your and Shannon's bright, happy faces in Chicago on the Northwestern Law School campus. Shannon was such an open person who loved people. I will miss him and be sad that this world is a little less bright because he's moved on. I wish you and your children good memories and a healing that will end up with laughter in your home again. Aloha.

I went to high school with Shannon. He was kind, generous and egalitarian even when surrounded by elitist. At that time, he drove a Jeep and listened to Woody Guthrie music. Although I have not seen him since high-school, I am saddened by his families loss.

Shannon,
Our astronomic friendship belongs in the readings of an epic tale. Though we only met once a year, the mark you left will forever remain in the story of my life. The smelting of life around you, forged bonds as strong as steel.
Farewell my friend. We will meet again in a place where Christmas is rejoiced everyday.

Shannon, in the 5 years I knew him, made a lasting impression on me which will stay with me a lifetime. He was kind and generous with his resources, the most valuable being his wisdom, experience and common sense. I enjoyed our breakfasts at Shartel Cafe and his candor and frankness in dealing with problems or giving advice. He loved his family, and his legacy lies in them. His three children are on the right path and will contribute to society and their fellow man in ways yet to be seen, but they will - of that I am sure. Tiffany was his rock, and truly a great life partner for Shannon. Shannon, you will be missed greatly, but never forgotten. Your friend, Sameer, on behalf of the Keole family.
